Why this journey
For most families this is the trip where the children meet snow for the first time, and Japan is the easiest country to do that in. The snow is reliable from January, the trains run straight into it, and nothing in this week asks anyone to ski.
The route moves in three stages. Tokyo first, with a guided day across the city. Then west to the Fuji Five Lakes for a night under Mount Fuji, which stands clearest over Lake Kawaguchi in winter. Then north to Nagano, where the wild macaques of Jigokudani come down the valley in the cold to sit in the hot spring — the park is reached on foot, by a path of about 1.6 kilometres through the forest, and the walk is part of the day.
The package is quoted with airport transfers, six nights with breakfast, the rail legs between the three bases and English-speaking support while you are in Japan. It is built for families with children and first-time snow visitors rather than for skiers.

Winter package
Quoted for the winter season, January to mid-March; other dates are quoted separately.
No skiing experience is needed and nobody is required to ski; skiing or a beginner lesson can be added as an upgrade.
The approach to the Snow Monkey Park is a walk of about 1.6 kilometres on a forest path, usually snow-covered, so warm layers, gloves and boots with grip are needed.
Travel documents and visa
Carry a passport valid for the whole of your stay in Japan.
Visa requirements depend on your nationality and are not included in this package; check them well before you book flights.
Getting around
Japanese stations and hotels have limited space for large suitcases; pack a small bag for nights away from your base city.
The operator provides English-speaking assistance; guiding in other languages can be requested and is quoted separately.
Common questions
When does this package run?
It is quoted for the winter season, January to mid-March, which is when the snow lies deepest and the macaques come down to the hot spring most reliably.
Does anyone have to ski?
No. The snow day is time in the snow rather than a lesson, and nothing in the week requires skiing experience. Skiing or a beginner lesson can be added as an upgrade.
Will we definitely see the monkeys?
They are wild animals in a national park and come to the hot spring on their own terms, so nothing can be guaranteed. In deep winter they are there most days, and the park publishes a daily count.
How do we reach the Snow Monkey Park?
On foot. The last stretch is a path of about 1.6 kilometres through the forest, usually snow-covered, which the park signs as some 25 minutes each way. It needs warm layers, gloves and boots with grip, and it does not suit a pushchair.
Is snow clothing provided?
Warm layers, waterproof boots and gloves are your own. Snow wear and equipment rental can be quoted as an add-on if you would rather not travel with winter kit.
Is it suitable for small children?
It is built for families, and the Tokyo and Fuji days are easy. The forest walk at Jigokudani is the one demanding part of the week, and a young child may need to be carried.
