Why this journey
This is the short version of Georgia, and it is built to stay in one hotel. You unpack once in Tbilisi and everything else is a day trip: the old royal capital at Mtskheta, the mountains at Kazbegi, and the vineyards east of the city in Kakheti. For a first visit of four nights that is usually the right trade, and it avoids the packing and repacking that a moving itinerary demands.
The compromise is the mountain day. Reaching Gergeti Trinity Church and returning to Tbilisi is a 310-kilometre round trip and takes the better part of eight hours. It is a long day and worth knowing about in advance; if you would rather sleep in the mountains than drive back the same evening, our From Valleys to Mountains itinerary does exactly that.
What you get in return is a genuinely representative week. Jvari and Svetitskhoveli cover the fourth-century arrival of Christianity, Ananuri and Gudauri cover the Military Highway, Kazbegi covers the high Caucasus, and Kakheti covers the wine — which in Georgia is not a sideline but the centre of how people eat and gather.

Carry a passport valid for the whole of your stay in Georgia.
Visa requirements depend on your nationality and are not included in this package; check them well before you book flights.

Altitude, sun and mountain weather
Gergeti sits at roughly 2,170 metres and is reached by four-wheel drive on a rough track.
Mountain weather turns quickly; a warm layer and a waterproof are worth carrying even in summer.
Travel insurance is not included and we strongly recommend arranging it.
Footwear and layers
Old Tbilisi, Sighnaghi and Mtskheta are cobbled; shoes with grip matter more than anything else you pack.
Shoulders and knees should be covered inside churches and monasteries, and women are asked to cover their hair at some of them.
A scarf in your day bag solves the dress requirement at every religious site on the route.
Currency and card use
The local currency is the Georgian lari; cards are widely accepted in Tbilisi and Batumi and less so in villages.
Wine bought at the cellar door, optional activities and meals other than breakfast are settled locally.
Tipping is discretionary and not included in the package price.
Common questions
Is four nights enough for a first visit to Georgia?
For a first visit that wants the headline sights, yes. You cover Tbilisi, the UNESCO churches at Mtskheta, the high Caucasus at Kazbegi and the Kakheti wine country. What four nights will not give you is the Black Sea coast or western Georgia — that needs six or seven.
How long is the Kazbegi day, really?
About 310 km round trip and seven to eight hours door to door. It is the longest day of the trip by some way. If that sounds like too much driving, our From Valleys to Mountains itinerary breaks it with an overnight at Gudauri instead.
Do we change hotels at any point?
No. All four nights are in the same Tbilisi hotel, so you unpack once. Everything outside the city is run as a day trip and you return to the same room each night.
What should I wear for the churches?
Shoulders and knees covered for everyone, and at Jvari, Svetitskhoveli and Bodbe women are asked to cover their hair. A scarf in your day bag handles all of it, and the sites are used to visitors arriving unprepared.
Is the wine tasting included?
Yes, the tasting at KTW is part of the package. Bottles to take away are bought at the cellar and are not included.
What is the best time of year for this itinerary?
The rates run from April to the end of October. May, June, September and early October give the most reliable mountain weather; midsummer is hot in Tbilisi and Kakheti, and the Kazbegi road is at its most dependable in those shoulder months.
