The drive

Ninh Binh sits about two hours south of Hanoi, and that journey happens twice. Twelve hours sounds long until you subtract four of them for the road.

Bai Dinh

The largest complex of its kind in Vietnam, and largely built in the 2000s rather than inherited — worth knowing if you arrive expecting antiquity. What people remember is the corridor of five hundred stone arhats, each carved with a different face and posture, running for well over a kilometre. Electric buggies cover the ground between the gate and the temples.

Trang An

Small open rowing boats work a circuit through flooded karst caves, and the rowers use their feet as much as their hands. Some ceilings drop low enough that everyone ducks at once. Around two hours on the water, and for most people this is the day.

Mua

Roughly five hundred steps cut into the limestone lead to a dragon on the ridge, with the Ngo Dong river looping through rice fields below. Steep and uneven, and best in the last hour of light.

Frequently asked

How hard is the climb at Mua?

Around five hundred steps, steep and uneven in places, with no alternative route to the top. Take it slowly and carry water.

Is Bai Dinh an ancient site?

Mostly not. The main complex was built in the 2000s beside a much older cave temple, which catches out visitors expecting antiquity.

How long is the boat circuit?

About two hours on open rowing boats, with no shade. Sun protection matters more here than anywhere else on the day.

How much of the twelve hours is driving?

Roughly four, split evenly between the journey down and back. The rest is spent at the three sites.
