The DDR Museum sets out daily life in the German Democratic Republic, and it is deliberately hands-on: drawers open, cupboards are full, and most of what is on display is meant to be touched rather than looked at through glass.
What to expectThe centrepiece is a reconstructed apartment of the period, furnished the way a state-allocated flat actually was, which you walk through room by room. Elsewhere there is a Trabant to sit in, the consumer goods a planned economy produced, and the apparatus of surveillance that sat behind all of it.
The museum does not separate the two halves of the story. The flat, the holiday snapshots and the car sit alongside the files and the listening equipment, and the effect is a fuller picture than either on its own.
Worth knowingIt sits on the Spree directly opposite the cathedral, so it combines easily with Museum Island. It is compact and very popular, and the hands-on rooms fill up: early or late in the day is more comfortable than the middle.
