Afternoon pickup

You are collected mid-afternoon, somewhere between half two and four depending on where you are staying — hotels in both Dubai and Sharjah are on the run. Getting to the edge of the dunes takes around forty minutes, and the last stretch of that is where the tarmac gives out.

The dunes

Drivers pull over at the roadside to let air out of the tyres before heading in, which is worth watching because it tells you exactly what is coming. The twenty minutes that follow are what most people came for: a vehicle running sideways across the face of a dune, cresting, dropping, and doing it again. It is genuinely rough. If you are prone to motion sickness, ask for the front and skip a heavy lunch.

At the camp

Everything slows down once you arrive. There is a short camel ride around the tents. A board is on hand if you want to take the slope. Then a long, unhurried evening: henna, shisha, a stage that runs through the night while food comes out under strings of lights. The desert cools fast once the sun is gone and the camp is open at the sides, so bring a layer you can put on.

Heading back

Most people are back at their hotel between nine and ten. It takes the whole afternoon and evening rather than a half day, so keep whatever you plan around it light.

Frequently asked

How rough is the dune driving?

Rough enough that it is both the main reason people book and the main reason a few regret it. Sit in the front if you are prone to motion sickness.

What time does it start and finish?

Collection falls between half past two and four depending on your hotel, and you are usually returned between nine and ten in the evening.

Is there vegetarian food?

Yes. The barbecue covers vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes as standard, so it does not need to be requested in advance.

Can we join from Sharjah?

Yes, hotels there are on the pickup run as well as those in Dubai. Expect a slightly earlier collection if you are further out.

Does anything change during Ramadan?

Some of the live entertainment does not run. The drive, the camp and the meal go ahead as normal.
