Dujiangyan is not a dam and never has been. It is an irrigation system begun around 256 BC under a governor named Li Bing, and it is still in daily use — which makes it roughly 2,270 years old and the oldest water management scheme on earth still doing the job it was built for.
The design is the remarkable part. Rather than blocking the Min River, Li Bing split it: a levee shaped like a fish's mouth divides the flow, sending the silt-heavy outer current downstream and the clearer inner current towards the plain. A spillway sheds floodwater sideways before it can reach the farmland, and the intake channel was cut clean through a mountain ridge.
That cut was made before iron tools were available for the work. The rock was heated with fire and doused with cold water until it cracked, and it took eight years. What resulted turned the Chengdu Plain from a flood-and-drought landscape into the region the Chinese have called the land of abundance ever since.
Mount Qingcheng is where, in 142 AD, a man named Zhang Daoling founded the Way of the Celestial Masters — the first organised Taoist church, with a priesthood, a liturgy and a structure, as distinct from the philosophy that had existed for centuries before.
The mountain is still covered in Taoist temples, and its name means green city wall: the forest is dense enough that from a distance the ridges read as ramparts. The lower trails are the accessible part, shaded and stepped, and pleasantly cool after the plain.
Dujiangyan's facility is primarily a rescue and rehabilitation base rather than a breeding showcase. Animals here include those recovered from the wild, elderly individuals and bears that cannot be released.
Feeding and close contact are governed by the centre's rules on the day, not by the booking, and those rules have tightened repeatedly over the past decade. Treat any encounter as subject to keeper approval, because that is exactly what it is.
