Geneva, Switzerland
From 370 metres to ice and back to palm trees: what to pack for a twenty-degree swing, the bridge between two summits, and the ice that is visibly going.

Unstructured time in Montreux along the lakeside promenade
One day that starts beside a lake at around 370 metres and ends up standing on ice at ten times that altitude, before dropping back down to a promenade lined with palm trees. The interest of this itinerary is the range, and the practical consequences of that range are what most people underestimate.
The plateau known as Glacier 3000 runs roughly twenty degrees colder than the lakeshore you left after breakfast, and the difference does not care what month it is. In July people arrive at the top in shorts and last eleven minutes. Add wind and the reflected sun off snow, which burns faces from below in a way nothing at lake level does, and the packing list writes itself: a proper jacket, sunglasses, high-factor cream, and shoes that will not soak through.
The suspension footbridge up there is the only one in the world strung between two mountain peaks rather than across a valley. It is a hundred-odd metres long, it moves underfoot, and the view from the middle takes in a good portion of the western Alps on a clear day. Some bookings include crossing it; on others it is arranged up on the mountain.
The glacier here is retreating at a rate that is now visible year to year. In 2022 the melt exposed bare rock on a saddle that had been under ice continuously for around two thousand years, effectively reopening an ancient pass. Wreckage and objects lost decades ago keep emerging as the surface lowers. What you are looking at is not a permanent feature of the landscape, and that is worth a minute of standing still.
Rides on the snow vehicle, the toboggan run and similar amusements are separate from what you have already booked and are settled on the mountain itself. Some run seasonally and some close in poor visibility, so treat them as possibilities rather than plans.
The lakeshore afternoon feels like a different country because in climatic terms it nearly is. The lake holds an enormous volume of water that releases heat slowly through winter, and the mountains behind block the north wind, producing a sheltered strip where subtropical planting survives. The Riviera name is not marketing invented for tourists; it is a description of what grows.
On a December night in 1971, someone fired a flare into the ceiling during a performance and the building went up, sending smoke across the water in front of a British band who were waiting to record there. They wrote a song about it that has since been played badly in every guitar shop on earth. The festival that made this town's name in music began four years before that, and a statue of a singer who lived and recorded here stands looking out over the water.
The oscillations that make the water rise and fall rhythmically at the ends of the lake were first studied properly here in the nineteenth century, by a local scientist generally regarded as the founder of the study of lakes. The phenomenon still carries the name he gave it.

The practical detail, and the answers people actually ask for.
Around twenty degrees colder, in any month. Add wind and glare reflected off snow, and summer visitors in light clothing usually retreat indoors within minutes.
A genuine jacket, sunglasses, strong sun cream and footwear that will not soak through. The sun at altitude burns from below off the snow, which catches out people who only planned for a lakeside day.
It links two peaks directly rather than spanning a valley, which no other suspension footbridge does. It runs about a hundred metres and flexes noticeably as you walk.
That depends on the option booked. Some arrangements cover it and some leave it to be handled on the mountain.
Visibly, year on year. Melt in 2022 uncovered bedrock on a saddle that had lain under continuous ice for roughly two millennia, and objects lost decades ago keep surfacing as the level drops.
A large body of water releasing stored heat through winter, plus mountains blocking the north wind, creates a sheltered belt warm enough for subtropical planting at a latitude level with Montreal.
It burned down during a concert in December 1971 after a flare was fired into the ceiling. A British band waiting to record nearby watched the smoke drift across the water and wrote the song everyone now plays badly.
