Reed Flute Cave runs about two hundred and forty metres into the hillside, and the lighting is the first thing you notice: every formation is floodlit in colour, which some visitors find magnificent and others find overdone. There is no middle position, and it is the defining feature either way.
What almost nobody mentions is written on the walls. More than seventy ink inscriptions survive inside, the oldest dating from 792 AD — visitors have been coming here and leaving their names for well over twelve hundred years, which puts the coloured floodlights into some perspective.
The rest of the day is spent at riverside vantage points around the city, where the limestone peaks rise straight out of level ground with the town built around their feet. These are short stops rather than walks.
Stairs inside the cave and paved paths elsewhere. Moderate rather than demanding.
