Start with the altitude

Lhasa sits at roughly 3,650 metres, and the climb to the Potala adds a hundred more on stairs. Most visitors feel it. If you have just flown in, this is not a first-day outing — give yourself a day to acclimatise, take the ascent slowly, and treat breathlessness as normal rather than alarming.

The Potala

Entry runs on a timed slot with a capped daily quota, and movement inside is one-directional at a set pace. You get about an hour among the chapels, tombs and assembly halls, which is less than it deserves and more than the building can absorb.

Jokhang and the Barkhor

Jokhang is older than the Potala and, for Tibetans, the more sacred of the two. Around it runs the Barkhor, a pilgrimage circuit walked clockwise and still in constant use — some walk it, some measure it out in full-body prostrations. Watching that is the part of the morning most visitors remember.

Pace

Four hours with short transfers between the three, which is efficient rather than leisurely.

Frequently asked

Do I need a permit to visit Tibet?

Foreign visitors need a Tibet Travel Permit, arranged in advance through a licensed operator and checked before you travel. It is separate from a Chinese visa.

How does entry to the Potala work?

On a timed slot with a capped daily quota. Your time is fixed and arriving late generally means not getting in at all.

Will the altitude affect me?

Lhasa is around 3,650 metres and the palace stairs add more. Allow a day to acclimatise beforehand, move slowly, and stop if you feel unwell.

How long is spent inside the palace?

About an hour. The route through the interior runs one way at a set pace, and photography inside is restricted.
