Hamburg’s harbour after dark, from the water.
The Speicherstadt warehouse district, lit up.
A working port that does not stop at night.
An hour, seated, with commentary in English and German.
Hamburg’s harbour is worth seeing twice — once by day and once after the lights come on. This is the second version: an hour on the water in the evening, when the port and the old warehouse quarter are lit and the city looks like a different place.
What you seeThe boat runs out among the working docks, where the cranes and container terminals keep going through the night, and then in among the narrower channels. The Speicherstadt is the part people come for: a whole district of red-brick warehouses standing on timber piles in the water, floodlit, with the canals running black between them.
Along the way come the quays, the bridges and the modern waterfront that has grown up beside the old one. Commentary runs in English and German, and covers what the port actually does as well as what it looks like.
Worth knowingIt is an hour, and it is on the water in northern Germany — bring a layer more than you think you need, particularly if you want to sit outside. Departure times shift with the seasons, since the whole point is darkness: in midsummer the evening sailing is much later than in winter.
