A day at Plantation Bay on Mactan, an island of flat coral rock where the water you swim in was drawn on a plan before it was dug.
A day spent inside a resort rather than travelling anywhere. The site is built around a chain of cut channels deep enough to lose your footing in, with pools, shallows and sand set between them. You eat once at one of the restaurants; everything else you order, and anything with an engine, is settled on the spot. There are no transfers, so you arrive and leave under your own arrangements.
Mactan is a slab of raised coral limestone, flat, porous and almost entirely without fresh surface water. Rain sinks straight through it. That geology explains the resort you are visiting: rather than a broad natural beach, this coast has a shallow reef flat and low coral rock at the waterline, so the lagoons here were cut and flooded rather than found. Knowing they are engineered makes them more impressive, not less — this is a landscape someone drew.
That same coral rock was the island's main export for centuries. Quarried in blocks, dried and cut, it went across the channel to build the Spanish-era churches and fortifications of Cebu — soft enough to saw when freshly cut, hardening as it dried in the sun. Look at the older walls anywhere in the region and you are looking at pieces of Mactan.
Mactan is where Ferdinand Magellan was killed. His expedition had reached the Philippines in 1521, and in a fight in the shallows off this island he was struck down by forces under Lapu-Lapu, a local chief who had refused to submit. The circumnavigation was completed without him. In the Philippines the event is remembered from the other side — Lapu-Lapu as the first resistance to European rule — and the city occupying most of Mactan carries his name.
The international airport is on this same island, minutes away, which makes a day pass unusually useful if you have a late flight and a morning checkout — you can swim, eat and shower without going back into Cebu City. Check the resort's day-use hours when you book, since access ends earlier than a hotel stay would suggest. Bring a hat: the shade at the lagoon edges is patchy and reflection off pale sand and water is strong. Anything you hire on site or order beyond lunch is settled directly at the resort.

The practical detail, and the answers people actually ask for.
No, they were cut into coral rock and flooded. Mactan has no rivers and little natural beach, so the water features here were designed rather than found.
It is raised coral limestone — flat and porous, so rain sinks straight through instead of forming streams.
Building Cebu. Quarried in blocks and cut while still soft, it hardened in the sun and went across the channel into the region's Spanish-era churches and forts.

Yes, one lunch at a resort restaurant. Drinks are generally separate, as is anything you order beyond the set meal.
No. Getting to the resort and away again is arranged by you.
Unusually well — the international airport is on the same island, minutes away, so you can swim, eat and shower after checking out of a hotel elsewhere.
Non-motorised equipment is available on site and arranged directly with the resort. Motorised water sports and spa treatments are not part of the pass.
