Overview

A private day from Guangzhou to Xinhui, on the western side of the Pearl River delta, for the river islet known as Bird Paradise and the old academy in the town.

It looks like a wood and it is one tree

The islet in the river carries what appears to be a small forest covering something close to a hectare. It is a single banyan, several centuries old, and everything you can see grew out of the original trunk.

Banyans do this deliberately. Branches send roots downward through the air, and where those roots reach the ground they thicken into what are effectively new trunks, which support further branches, which send down more roots. Given enough time and no interruption, one tree walks outward across the ground until it becomes a canopy with hundreds of legs.

Standing under it, the giveaway is the absence of gaps. In a wood, trees compete and the canopy is patchy; here everything is one connected organism and the cover is continuous.

Two shifts of birds and they never meet

The tree holds an enormous colony, and its most striking feature is the timetable.

Egrets occupy it as a base for the day, leaving at first light to feed in the surrounding fish ponds and paddies and returning at dusk. Night herons do the opposite, roosting through the daylight and heading out as the egrets come back.

The result is a handover at each end of the day, when the tree fills with both populations at once and then empties again by half. Arriving in the middle of the afternoon means missing it entirely, which is the single most important thing to know about timing this visit.

The essay is why Chinese visitors come

The site is famous nationally because of a short piece written about it in the 1930s by one of the country's major modern writers, which entered the school curriculum and stayed there.

Most domestic visitors therefore arrive with a text in their heads, and read the place against it. That is worth knowing if you wonder why a tree draws coachloads: it is a literary destination as much as a natural one.

Practical shape

Timing is everything here, and a private vehicle is what makes the early or late arrival possible.

Access to the islet is by boat, and the boats operate to the light rather than to a fixed clock in either direction.

Bring binoculars if you own them, and something waterproof for your shoulders: a colony of that size is directly overhead for much of the visit, and the consequences are obvious.

Frequently asked

Is it really one tree?

Yes. What looks like a small forest on the islet is a single banyan several centuries old, and all of it grew from the original trunk.

How does a tree spread like that?

Branches drop roots through the air; where those reach the ground they thicken into new trunks that carry more branches, which send down more roots again.

How would I tell from underneath?

By the lack of gaps. Competing trees leave a patchy canopy, and here the cover is continuous because it is all one organism.

What birds live there?

A very large colony, principally egrets and night herons, sharing the same tree on opposite schedules.

What does that mean in practice?

Egrets leave at first light and return at dusk; night herons roost by day and go out as the egrets come back.

When should I arrive?

Early or late. Mid-afternoon misses the changeover entirely, and the changeover is the thing worth seeing.

Why is it so well known in China?

A short essay written about it in the 1930s by a major modern writer went into the school curriculum and stayed there.

How do you reach the islet?

On the water. Departures shift with the seasons because the operators work to daylight, not to a printed schedule.
