Overview

Eight hours in Hanoi with a private guide: the Old Quarter on foot, street food and fruit tasted as you go, and a ticket to a water puppet performance, with the route shaped around what interests you.

What to expect

  • Meeting your guide, with hotel pickup where that was arranged.
  • A walk through the Old Quarter, stopping to taste rather than to sit down.
  • Sample portions at stalls the guide knows, including seasonal fruit.
  • Time to look at whatever holds you — the route is yours to redirect.
  • A scheduled water puppet performance, with your ticket included.
  • The rest of the day as you like it, inside eight hours.

Every street is a trade

The Old Quarter's streets are named for what they sold. The word Hàng means merchandise, and what follows it is the goods: Hàng Bạc is silver, Hàng Gai is hemp and silk, Hàng Mã is votive paper, Hàng Thiếc is tin.

This was not decoration. Craftsmen came in from particular villages and settled together by trade, forming guilds that controlled a street each, and enough of that survives that you can still walk down a lane where every shopfront is doing the same thing — cutting sheet metal, or stacking paper offerings to be burned for the dead. Your guide can tell you which streets have kept their trade and which now sell phone cases.

Why the houses are so thin

Look at the frontages. Many are barely three metres wide and run back forty or more, sometimes with three courtyards inside and a family at each level.

They are that shape because property was taxed on the width of the street frontage, so building narrow and deep was the rational response — the same arithmetic that produced narrow houses in Amsterdam. The result is a house type called a tube house, and once you see the first one you will notice nothing else for an hour.

The water is murky on purpose

Water puppetry is performed in a waist-deep pool with the puppeteers standing behind a bamboo screen, working figures on long rods and strings beneath the surface.

The water is deliberately clouded. Clear water would show the rods, the joints and the arms of the eight people making it happen, and the whole illusion depends on the surface reading as solid. Village troupes historically guarded the rigs closely, passing the mechanisms only within families, and techniques were lost outright when a village stopped performing. What you are watching is stagecraft that has been kept secret for centuries rather than folklore that has been dusted off.

What to drink while you are here

If the tastings include egg coffee, do not skip it on principle. It was invented in Hanoi in the 1940s, when fresh milk was scarce, by whipping egg yolk with sweetened condensed milk into a thick foam and floating it on strong coffee.

It sounds wrong and tastes like a warm dessert. It is also a piece of local ingenuity in the same family as everything else this city does with shortage.

Practicalities

Hotel pickup applies only where it was arranged, and full meals are not part of the booking — the tastings are sample portions, so plan dinner separately.

Wear shoes you can walk in for hours on uneven pavement, and tell your guide early what you cannot eat.

Choose your option

Open it to pick a date and work out the price.

Options are being loaded — the desk can quote you directly in the meantime.

Frequently asked

Why are Old Quarter streets named the way they are?

They are shorthand for a guild. A trade arrived from one village, took a lane and kept it, and the street simply became the name of what it made.

Do the streets still sell those things?

Some do. You can still walk a lane where every shopfront is cutting sheet metal or stacking paper offerings to be burned for the dead. Others now sell phone cases.

Why are the houses so narrow?

Property was taxed on the width of the street frontage, so building narrow and deep was the rational response — the same arithmetic that produced Amsterdam's thin houses.

How deep do they go?

Far enough that the back of a house can be a different century from the front, and families often let the middle rooms to relatives or lodgers.

Why is the puppet water so cloudy?

To hide the rig. Clear water would show the rods, the joints and the arms of the eight people working the figures from behind the screen.

Is it a preserved folk tradition?

Both, really — but the guarding is the part that shaped it. A troupe that gave away its rig lost the only thing it had that a neighbouring village did not.

What is egg coffee?

A wartime substitution that stuck. Yolk and sugar behave enough like cream to make a foam, and the result outlived the shortage that caused it.

Will I need dinner afterwards?

Probably. The tastings are sample portions rather than meals, and full meals are not part of the booking.
