The only interior you enter is the tower

Worth being clear about before you book. This private tour works outdoors, around the square, the waterfront and the lanes behind, and the two great interiors facing it — the basilica and the palace — are explicitly not included. If seeing inside those matters to you, arrange them separately and treat this as the walk that makes sense of everything around them.

The campanile is younger than it looks

The tower standing over the square today went up in 1912. Its predecessor collapsed completely one morning in 1902, coming down in a heap that remarkably killed nobody, and the city resolved to rebuild it exactly as it had been, in the same spot. What you ride up is a careful copy of a thousand-year-old structure, barely a century old itself.

What the view does and does not show

The surprise from the top is that Venice reads as a solid field of terracotta roofs. The canals that define the city at street level are almost entirely hidden by the buildings that line them. What you get instead is the lagoon, the islands scattered across it and the shape of the whole city as one dense mass — which is a different and arguably better thing.

Mind the bells

They still ring, and you may be standing in the chamber beside them when they do. It is startling and extremely loud at close range, and it is one of the more memorable two minutes of any visit to Venice.

Frequently asked

Does this include going inside the basilica or the palace?

No. Both interiors are excluded and must be arranged separately. This tour covers the square, the waterfront and the surrounding lanes from outside, plus the bell tower.

Are there stairs up the tower?

No, a lift runs to the viewing chamber. That makes it one of the few high viewpoints in Venice reachable without climbing, which is worth knowing if stairs are difficult.

Can you see the canals from the top?

Barely. The buildings hide them almost entirely, so the city reads as an unbroken field of tiled roofs with the lagoon and its islands beyond.

Is the tower original?

It is a faithful reconstruction. The earlier campanile collapsed in 1902 and the replacement was completed in 1912, built to the same design on the same spot.

How loud are the bells?

Very, at close range. They still ring and you may be in the chamber when they do — startling, brief and memorable rather than dangerous.
