Overview

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the presidential palace and the tower cluster on the corniche were all built within the last twenty-five years, and together they are how the capital of the Emirates chooses to present itself. This is a half day linking the three, with air-conditioned driving between them.

What to expect

The mosque comes first, entered through a long marble courtyard before the prayer halls. The palace follows, a short drive west, where the public wing and its gardens are open to visitors. The last stop is the towers on the seafront, looking back along the coast.

The clothing rules are strict, and they are enforced

This is what catches people out. At the mosque, clothing must be loose and reach the ankles and the wrists for everyone, and women must cover their hair. Loose is the operative word: leggings, skinny jeans and close-fitting maxi dresses are refused even though they cover the skin, as are anything sheer and anything with slogans or images. Visitors who arrive unsuitably dressed are turned back at the screening point, and the free loan of robes that used to solve this no longer operates. Come dressed correctly, with a scarf in your bag.

Friday changes everything

Worth checking against the day you book. The mosque is closed to visitors for most of Friday, opening only after the congregational prayers in the afternoon, and during Ramadan the hours change again. Entry is by a timed reservation which must be held in advance even though the mosque admits visitors without a ticket.

Under your feet and over your head

The two records worth knowing about before you look up. The main prayer hall holds a single hand-knotted carpet of roughly 5,600 square metres, made in one piece by well over a thousand weavers and still the largest of its kind anywhere. Above it hang seven chandeliers of gilded copper and Swarovski crystal, the biggest around ten metres across. The courtyard outside is inlaid with flowers in semi-precious stone across seventeen thousand square metres of white marble — a design that never repeats.

The palace is new

A common misunderstanding. Qasr Al Watan is a working seat of government completed in 2017 and opened to the public in 2019, not a heritage residence. What is on show is craftsmanship at scale rather than history: a domed great hall thirty-seven metres across, a library of manuscripts, and rooms still used for state business. If you go in expecting an old fort you will misjudge it.

The observation deck is a lounge

Set expectations here too. The viewing level near the top of the second tower is run as a café; admission is generally redeemable against what you order, and there is no exhibit beyond the window. The view along the corniche and out to the islands is genuinely good, and the tower will be familiar to anyone who has seen a car jump between two of them in a film.

What the booking covers

The arrangement is built around the vehicle and the driving between sites. Admission to the palace and the tower is arranged separately, and whether a guide travels with you or a driver alone depends on the option booked.

Frequently asked

What exactly do I have to wear at the mosque?

Loose clothing covering ankles and wrists for everyone, and a headscarf for women. Leggings, skinny jeans, close-fitting long dresses, sheer fabrics and printed slogans are all refused, even when they cover the skin.

Are robes lent at the entrance?

Not any more. Visitors are expected to arrive appropriately dressed, and those who do not are turned back at the screening point. Carry a scarf rather than relying on borrowing one.

Can I visit on a Friday?

Afternoons only. The morning belongs to worship, and the visiting window opens once the main prayers have finished. Ramadan runs to its own schedule again.

Is Qasr Al Watan a historic palace?

No. It was completed in 2017 and opened to visitors in 2019, and it remains a working seat of government. The appeal is the scale of the craftsmanship rather than age.

What is at the top of the tower?

A viewing lounge run as a café, with admission usually redeemable against what you order. The view is excellent; there is no exhibition.

Are the entrance tickets included?

No. The arrangement covers transport between the three sites; admission to the palace and the observation level is arranged separately on the day.
