Why this journey

Along the Silk Road is the most balanced of the one-week programmes. It gives Bukhara and Samarkand the time they deserve, and then twice leaves the cities behind — once south over the Zarafshan range to Shakhrisabz, and once north-east of Tashkent into the western Tian Shan.

The week opens with Tashkent’s old quarter and bazaar and the metro, then the morning train to Bukhara and an afternoon walk from Lyabi-Khauz to the Kalyan Minaret and the Ark. The following day is kept loose, with the afternoon train to Samarkand arriving in time for the Registan by night.

From Samarkand the road climbs through the Aman-Kutan gorge and over the Takhta-Karacha pass to Temur’s birthplace, then returns by mid-afternoon. The next day is the full Samarkand programme, from the Gur-Emir to Ulugbek’s observatory, with the evening train back to the capital.

The sixth day is spent in the Chimgan mountains, with a chairlift ride and the Charvak reservoir, before the flight home. Guides, trains, the chairlift, entrance fees and two plov lunches are included, and there are three hotel classes to choose from.

Common questions

How much walking is involved?

The city days are on foot for several hours at a comfortable pace, often on uneven stone. The Shakhrisabz and Chimgan days are mostly by car with short walks.

Can I add extra nights?

Yes. Extra nights can be added in Tashkent, Bukhara or Samarkand at a nightly supplement that depends on the hotel class you choose.

Do I need a visa for Uzbekistan?

Citizens of many countries, including the UK and the EU, can enter Uzbekistan visa-free for a stay of up to 30 days; others, including Indian passport holders, apply for an e-visa, and visa support is included in the tour. Rules change, so check the current requirement for your passport before booking flights.

Which currency should I bring?

The Uzbek som. Cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants in Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara, but bazaars and small cafes are cash only; ATMs and exchange desks are easy to find in the cities.

What is the best time of year to go?

April to early June and September to October are the most comfortable. July and August are very hot in Bukhara, often above 40°C, and winters are cold but quiet.
