Why this journey
Most Egypt itineraries stay in the Nile corridor. This one drives 350 kilometres west into the Western Desert and sleeps there, which is the only way to see the White Desert at the hour it is worth seeing.
The afternoon runs by 4x4 through a sequence that changes colour as it goes: the Black Desert, where volcanic dolerite has broken down over the sandstone and left the hills dark; the natural hot spring in the Valley of El Haize; Crystal Mountain, a ridge of quartz that catches the light; and the rock formations of the Valley of Agabat.
It finishes in the White Desert at sunset, among chalk shapes wind-carved over millennia. That timing is the whole point of the overnight — the same drive done as a day trip from Cairo gets you there in flat midday light, if at all.
Either side of it, Cairo: the Giza plateau with an Egyptologist, and the transfers all private.

Common questions
Why stay overnight instead of doing it in a day?
Because of the light. Bahariya is 350km from Cairo, so a day trip puts you in the White Desert around the middle of the day. Staying over means you are there at sunset, which is what the place is known for.
How long is the drive out?
Roughly 350 kilometres, leaving about 07:00. It is the longest single drive in this batch of packages and the reason breakfast that day is early.
What standard is the desert hotel?
A 4-star property at Bahariya Oasis. Facilities in the oases are simpler than in Cairo — comfortable and functional rather than luxurious.
Are meals included in the desert?
Yes. Lunch at a local restaurant and dinner at the hotel are both included on the Bahariya day, along with breakfast.
Is the 4x4 section rough?
It is off-road over sand and rock, so expect movement. It is not technical driving, but anyone with back trouble should know it is a few hours of uneven ground.
