A 9-day China journey through Beijing, Luoyang, Xi’an and Shanghai, linking the Great Wall, imperial landmarks, Buddhist heritage, the Terracotta Warriors and high-speed rail.
Travel across China’s most layered cities on a 9-day journey that links imperial Beijing, Buddhist Luoyang, warrior-era Xi’an and modern Shanghai. The route is designed to show the country through its defining contrasts: ceremonial squares and palace courtyards, mountain-built fortifications, ancient grottoes, and fast-moving city skylines.
Begin in Beijing with time to settle in before moving into the city’s historic centre, where Tian’anmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven reveal the scale and symbolism of imperial China. A full day at the Great Wall near Juyong Pass adds one of the country’s most recognisable landscapes, with a stop for jade craftsmanship and a photo pause at the Olympic Park when time allows.
The journey then shifts onto China’s high-speed rail network, first to Luoyang for White Horse Temple and then onward via Dengfeng and the Shaolin complex. Here, the mix of temple heritage, cave temples and kung fu tradition creates one of the most distinctive cultural sections of the trip, before the train carries you into Xi’an.
In Xi’an, the Terracotta Warriors provide the centrepiece, balanced by visits to the Ancient City Wall, Big Wild Goose Pagoda and local craft and shopping stops. The tour finishes in Shanghai, where classical gardens, temple architecture, silk-making, Nanjing Road and the Bund place old and new Shanghai side by side. With hotel stays, guided sightseeing, daily breakfast, selected dinners and rail connections included, this is a strong choice for travellers who want a broad and memorable introduction to China.
You leave from a different place than you arrive — book an open-jaw flight, not a return.
