Why this journey
Most short Georgia itineraries run out to the mountains and back to Tbilisi the same evening. This one stops overnight at Gudauri instead, which is the single change that alters the whole trip: you are in the high Caucasus at dusk and again at first light, when the peaks above the Devil’s Valley are clear and the coach traffic has gone.
The rest of the week is built around contrast. Two days belong to Tbilisi — the sulphur-bath quarter, the cable car up to Narikala, the botanical garden in the gorge behind it, and the Dry Bridge market where Soviet-era bric-a-brac is still sold off blankets. One day belongs to Mtskheta, the old royal capital, where Jvari and Svetitskhoveli are both inscribed by UNESCO. The last full day runs east into Kakheti for a cellar visit, the monastery at Bodbe and the walled hill town of Sighnaghi above the Alazani Valley.
It is a driving holiday in a small country: none of the days are long by regional standards, but the road between Tbilisi and Kazbegi climbs to a mountain pass and the scenery is a large part of what you are paying for.

Altitude, sun and mountain weather
Gergeti sits at roughly 2,170 metres and is reached by four-wheel drive on a rough track.
Mountain weather turns quickly; a warm layer and a waterproof are worth carrying even in summer.
Travel insurance is not included and we strongly recommend arranging it.
Footwear and layers
Old Tbilisi, Sighnaghi and Mtskheta are cobbled; shoes with grip matter more than anything else you pack.
Shoulders and knees should be covered inside churches and monasteries, and women are asked to cover their hair at some of them.
A scarf in your day bag solves the dress requirement at every religious site on the route.
Currency and card use
The local currency is the Georgian lari; cards are widely accepted in Tbilisi and Batumi and less so in villages.
Wine bought at the cellar door, optional activities and meals other than breakfast are settled locally.
Tipping is discretionary and not included in the package price.
Common questions
What makes this different from your other Georgia tours?
The night at Gudauri. Our other programmes drive out to Kazbegi and return to Tbilisi the same evening; this one stops in the mountains, so you get the Caucasus at dusk and at first light instead of only in the middle of the day.
How difficult is the trip up to Gergeti Trinity Church?
The church sits at about 2,170 metres and the track up is rough, so the last stretch is done in a four-wheel drive, which is included. From where the vehicle stops there is a short uphill walk on uneven ground.
Is the wine tasting included, and am I expected to buy?
The tasting at KTW is included. Buying a bottle afterwards is common and appreciated but entirely optional, and nobody at the cellar will press you.
Can we do the paragliding at Gudauri?
Yes, and staying overnight at Gudauri gives you more of a window for it than a day trip does. It runs about 15 minutes and costs USD 140 per person, paid locally, and it depends on the wind on the day.
What happens if the mountain road is closed?
The Georgian Military Highway can close at short notice in bad weather. If that happens we substitute the nearest equivalent — usually more time at Ananuri and Mtskheta — rather than cancelling the day outright.
How much of each day is spent driving?
The mountain day covers about 200 km and runs seven to eight hours door to door; the Kakheti day is about 230 km over six to seven hours. Georgia is small, but the mountain road is slow by design, and the scenery is part of what you are there for.
