An active 8-day Bhutan tour through Paro, Thimphu, Gangtey, Punakha and Wangdue, combining monastery visits, valley hikes and mountain passes.
Hiking Western Bhutan - 8 Days is designed for travellers who want to experience Bhutan on foot as well as by road, with a route that links Paro, Thimphu, Gangtey, Punakha and Wangdue in one active journey. The pace balances scenic drives with rewarding hikes, so you can reach monasteries, ridge viewpoints and valley trails without rushing through the country’s western landscapes.
The trip opens in Paro and moves quickly into Thimphu, where you begin with a gentle introduction to Bhutan’s capital before heading to Dodedra Shedra and the Buddha Dordenma area. From there, the itinerary climbs into higher country, crossing Dochu-la Pass and continuing to the Phobjika Valley, where wetlands, open meadows and the Gangtey Monastery area create a quieter contrast to the city days.
Several days focus on proper hiking rather than short sightseeing walks. Lungchusey Gompa offers wide mountain views, the trail to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) adds the classic Bhutan ascent, and Chele-la Pass brings alpine scenery with time for a short high-altitude walk. Along the way, Punakha and Wangdue add river valleys, dzongs and another strong cultural layer to the journey.
Accommodation is arranged in hotels, guesthouses or optional farmhouse stays, with private transfers, an English-speaking guide, Bhutan visa support and meals included as specified. It is a good fit for active travellers who want a guided Bhutan itinerary with real walking days, monastery access and reliable logistics between each region.
Because the route includes steady climbs, mountain passes and longer trail sections, a basic level of fitness is important. The reward is a trip that shows Western Bhutan at a measured pace, with enough structure to stay comfortable and enough time on the ground to appreciate the scenery, the monasteries and the atmosphere of each valley.
