The rules on the screened street are not a novelty

St. Pauli's most talked-about lane is closed off behind hoardings, and who may walk down it is genuinely restricted: men over eighteen only. Women and minors are turned back, and those who ignore that are given a hostile reception by the people who work there. Photography inside is absolutely prohibited and enforced by the residents themselves rather than by any authority. The tour passes the entrance rather than entering, which is the sensible way to handle it.

Put the camera away around the working district

This extends well beyond that one street. Nobody working in this trade has consented to appear in your holiday photographs, and pointing a lens at them will provoke a fast and justified reaction. Photograph the neon, the bars and your own group as much as you like.

Two entirely different neighbourhoods

By daylight this is a slightly shabby quarter of shuttered doorways, kebab shops and delivery vans, and you can walk it in ten minutes wondering what the fuss is. After dark it fills, the neon does its work, and the same streets become something else completely. An evening walk is the only version that makes sense.

People actually live here

Behind the strip is an ordinary Hamburg district with schools, a fiercely loved football club and a long dockworkers' history that explains most of its politics. The guiding is better when it covers that, and the neighbourhood deserves visitors who understand they are in someone's home.

Frequently asked

Can everyone walk down the screened street?

No. Access is restricted to men over eighteen, and women and minors are turned away, sometimes forcefully. The tour passes the entrance rather than going in.

Am I allowed to take photographs?

Of the streets, neon and bars, yes. Of anyone working in the district, absolutely not — it is prohibited, taken seriously, and will provoke an immediate response.

When is the best time to go?

After dark. In daylight the quarter looks shuttered and unremarkable; the atmosphere the tour is describing only exists once the neon is on and the streets fill.

Is it safe?

Generally yes, and busier means safer here. Stay with the group, keep valuables in front pockets on crowded nights, and be firm with the touts outside the clubs.

How long does the walk take?

Around two hours including the indoor stop, though it depends on the group and the night. It is all on foot over a compact area.
