Barcelona Zoo occupies a large part of the Parc de la Ciutadella, a short walk from the old town, and holds around four hundred species laid out in recreated versions of the habitats they come from.
What to expectThe enclosures are built around what each animal needs rather than around the visitor’s sightline, which means some patience — but it also means you see animals behaving rather than pacing. Mammals, reptiles and birds are all represented, and the aviary mixes species native to Catalonia with birds from much further away.
The grounds are flat, planted and shaded, and the zoo is inside a public park with wide paths, so it works well with a pushchair and with children who need to stop often.
Worth knowingAllow half a day to see it without hurrying. The zoo shares the Parc de la Ciutadella with its gardens and lake, so it pairs naturally with an hour in the park itself, and the Barceloneta beach is a short walk beyond.
