Overview

A private half-day of four hours downriver from Guilin: the flagstone streets of Daxu, a thousand-year-old trading town on the bank of the Li, and Crown Cave, a river cave you travel through partly on foot and partly by boat.

What to expect

About an hour on the road, then walking in the town and a level circuit inside the cave. Neither is strenuous. With a private guide the balance between the two is yours to set, and Daxu rewards the slower option.

A town that faced the water

Daxu grew up as a river port, and its geometry still shows it. The main street runs parallel to the Li for roughly two kilometres, but the town's real frontage was the water: goods came off the boats, crossed the bank and went straight into the shops. The road behind was an afterthought. This is why the buildings turn their best face towards a river that no longer carries cargo, and why the street feels like a back lane.

Stone stairs that belonged to trades

Down the riverbank run a series of stone stairways to the water. They are not public conveniences but working infrastructure: each landing served particular goods and the merchants who dealt in them, so cargo arrived at the right steps for the right street. A dozen or so survive, worn into deep hollows by feet and loads, and they are the clearest surviving evidence of what this town actually did.

Shophouses one room wide

The buildings are narrow at the front and long behind, with small courtyards punched through the depth to bring in light and let heat out. Shop at the street, storage and workshop behind, family upstairs and at the back. It is a plan built for a place where frontage on the trading street was the scarce thing and depth was not, and it produces interiors that are far bigger than they look from outside.

A cave you ride through

Crown Cave takes its name from the shape of the hill above it, and it is not a walk-through cave in the usual sense. An underground river runs through the system, so part of the visit is made sitting in a boat on that water, with the rest covered on foot and by lift. The scale is easier to grasp from a boat than from a path, and the air is a constant sixteen degrees or so whatever the season.

Practicalities

Wear shoes with grip: flagstones in the town are polished by centuries of use and the cave paths stay damp. Bring a layer for the cave, which is markedly cooler than outside in summer.

Frequently asked

How far is Daxu from Guilin?

About an hour by road, which is what makes this a comfortable half day rather than a full one.

Why does the town face the river?

Because the river was the road. Goods came off boats, crossed the bank and entered the shops directly, so the buildings present their best side to the water and the street behind came later.

What are the stone stairways for?

They were working landings. Each served particular goods and the merchants dealing in them, so cargo arrived at the steps nearest the right street. A dozen or so survive, hollowed by use.

Why are the buildings so narrow?

Frontage on a trading street was the scarce resource, depth was not. The result is a narrow shop at the front with storage, workshop and living space running a long way back, lit by small courtyards.

Is Crown Cave a walking tour?

Partly. An underground river runs through it, so a section is done sitting in a boat, with the rest on foot and by lift.

How cold is the cave?

Around sixteen degrees year-round, which is pleasant in summer and cool in winter. Bring a layer either way.

Is the cave entry included?

It is covered when specified at booking. The guide and private transport are included throughout.
