The coast road south of Colombo runs past fishing villages, river mouths and palm, and ends at Galle — the best-preserved colonial town in South Asia. This is a day of it, with stops that are as much about how the coast lives as about what it looks like.
GalleGalle’s old town sits inside its ramparts, and the Dutch laid it out: charming Dutch-style buildings along a grid of narrow streets, with the sea on three sides and the walls wide enough to walk along. Your guide fills in the history — how a Portuguese port became a Dutch one, and why a town built for trade four centuries ago still works as a town.
Around it you see everyday life in Galle and the local industries that sustain it, fish farming among them.
The river, the turtles and the beachAt Balapitiya you take a boat onto the river, in among mangrove channels where the water goes still and the birds get close — the quietest hour of the day.
The turtle hatchery is the stop that stays with people. Sri Lanka’s beaches are nesting grounds for sea turtles, the hatchery protects eggs that would otherwise be taken, and you see the hatchlings raised by the local people who run it. It is a small operation doing something serious.
Then Beruwala Beach, and time to stop moving.
Worth knowingIt is a long day with real driving in it, so start early. Bring sun protection, something for the beach, and shoes you can walk Galle’s streets in. At the hatchery, follow what the staff tell you about handling — the rules exist for the animals, not for the visitors.
