Overview

A long day of twelve to thirteen hours from Baku north to Guba and up into the Greater Caucasus at Shahdag, with a stop at the striped hills known as the Candy Cane Mountains and hotel pickup at both ends.

What to expect

  • Breakfast at your own hotel, then collection.
  • The drive north out of the coastal plain, gaining height steadily.
  • The Candy Cane Mountains: a short walk on loose ground and time for photographs.
  • Guba, and the orchard country around it.
  • Shahdag: the mountain resort, the viewpoints and whatever the season offers.
  • The long drive back to Baku in the evening.

The striped hills are a record of an ancient seabed

The red and white bands that give these hills their nickname are not decorative. They are pages.

Each layer was laid down on the floor of a sea that covered this region for millions of years. The red bands are iron that oxidised in oxygen-rich water; the pale ones formed when the same seabed went oxygen-poor. Read from bottom to top, the stripes are a chemical diary of a body of water that no longer exists, written in the order it happened.

They are steeply tilted now, which is why you can see them from the side. Something lifted a seafloor and stood it up on edge.

That something is still happening

The Greater Caucasus exists because the Arabian plate is driving north into Eurasia and has been for tens of millions of years. The range is the crumple where the two meet, and it is still going up.

That is worth carrying with you on the drive. The mountains ahead of you are not a finished landscape but an ongoing collision, and the road climbs through the wreckage of it: folded rock, deep-cut river valleys and slopes that shed material every spring.

Shahdag itself stands over four thousand metres. The resort sits well below the summit, but the scale is unmistakable once you are up there — this is a different country from the oil plain you left after breakfast.

Guba is orchard country

The lower valleys around Guba are apple country, and have been for a very long time. It is worth noticing on the way through: after the dry, gas-scented ground of the peninsula, the north is green, watered and agricultural, and the change happens over the course of about two hours.

What Shahdag is and is not

It is a purpose-built mountain resort, developed in the past fifteen years as part of the same national push that produced the new architecture in the capital.

That means good access and infrastructure rather than wilderness. In winter it is a ski area; in summer the lifts and activities operate on their own schedule and are arranged and settled on site rather than being part of this day.

Practicalities

Twelve to thirteen hours, with a great deal of that on the road. It is a long day by any measure and the return is late.

No meal is included. Breakfast is at your own hotel before pickup, and lunch is your own arrangement on the way.

The ground at the striped hills is loose and uneven, and there is no shade.

Mountain weather does not follow the forecast for Baku. Take a layer even in summer; the difference at altitude is significant.

Frequently asked

What causes the red and white banding?

Iron in the sediment: red where it oxidised in oxygenated water, pale where the same floor went short of oxygen.

Where were those layers formed?

On the bed of a sea that covered this region for millions of years and has since gone.

Why can the layers be seen from the side?

They were tilted steeply after they formed, so a horizontal sequence now stands close to upright.

What lifted them?

The same collision that raised the whole range, as one plate drives north into another.

Has that process finished?

No. The mountains are still rising, and the slopes shed material every spring as a result.

How high is the peak?

Over four thousand metres, though the resort sits considerably lower on the mountain.

When was the resort developed?

Within roughly the past fifteen years, alongside the wider building programme in the capital.

What is the country around Guba like?

Green and agricultural — apple-growing valleys, quite unlike the dry peninsula you set out from.
