Halong, Vietnam
The same drowned limestone under two provincial administrations, cliffs holding a primate found nowhere else, and a bay that empties at four.
Two bays that look alike and are managed nothing alike
Cliffs holding a species with a single address on earth
The hours after the day fleet has gone home
A cabin with a door and a window rather than a deck seat
Beaches that the neighbouring bay simply does not have
Two days and one night aboard a junk-style ship through Halong Bay and neighbouring Lan Ha Bay, with an en-suite cabin, meals on deck, kayaking where conditions allow and a cookery demonstration.
Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay are the same drowned limestone landscape, but they sit in different provinces — Halong in Quang Ninh, Lan Ha off Cat Ba island in Hai Phong. That administrative line is why they feel so different.
Halong's routes are tightly managed and heavily used, while Lan Ha sits outside that system and carries a fraction of the traffic. Lan Ha also has beaches, well over a hundred small ones tucked between its islands, where Halong has almost none. A boat that works both is showing you the same geology under two entirely different amounts of pressure.
The cliffs of Cat Ba hold the golden-headed langur, a primate found nowhere on earth but this island. By the early 2000s hunting had reduced it to around fifty animals, which is close enough to gone that most species do not return from it.
It is recovering, slowly, under protection — the population is now roughly double that, still one of the rarest primates alive. You are unlikely to see one; they favour high limestone faces away from boat traffic. But knowing they are up there changes how the cliffs read from the deck.
The case for an overnight rather than a day trip is simple: the bay empties. Day boats turn for harbour in the afternoon, and what follows is the part nobody photographs — the water going still, the karsts turning black against the sky, and a silence that a working bay does not have between nine and four.
Dawn is the same in reverse. If you take one thing from two days on this water, make it being awake early on the second morning.
Transfers to the pier are not automatically part of this booking, and drinks, insurance, gratuities and optional extras sit outside the itinerary too.
Cabins are air-conditioned and en-suite but compact, as ship cabins are; pack an overnight bag and leave the rest at your hotel. Kayaking runs when conditions and the day's schedule permit rather than on demand, and life jackets are not optional. Bring something warm for the deck after dark — the bay is cooler on the water than the forecast for the mainland suggests.

Slowly, under protection — roughly double that number now, and still one of the rarest primates alive.
Probably not. They keep to high limestone faces away from boat traffic, which is exactly why any of them are left.
Because the bay empties. Day boats turn for harbour in the afternoon, and the stillness that follows does not exist between nine and four.
Early on the second morning. Dawn is the same emptiness in reverse, and it is the part most people sleep through.
No. It runs when conditions and the day's schedule allow rather than on request, and life jackets are compulsory when it does.
