Five paddle steamers still work this lake

Lake Lucerne runs the largest fleet of historic paddle steamers in service anywhere in the world, and they are not museum pieces brought out for occasions.

Five of them are in regular timetabled operation, the oldest dating from 1901, with their steam engines visible mid-ship behind glass so passengers can watch the connecting rods turn while under way. They carry commuters, schoolchildren, cyclists and shopping alongside visitors, because on a lake shaped like this the boat is often the shortest route between two villages.

Whether your cruise is aboard a paddle steamer or a modern motor vessel depends on the day's timetable rather than on anything that can be promised at booking. If it matters to you, the steamer schedules are published seasonally and worth a look.

The country was founded on a meadow you pass

On the southern arm, below wooded slopes with no road to it, there is a field called the Rütli.

Tradition holds that in 1291 men from the three original cantons met there and swore the oath that founded the Swiss Confederation. Historians argue about the date, the details and how much of the story was tidied up later; nobody argues that the site became the symbolic centre of the country.

It is deliberately unmarked. There is no monument, no visitor centre and no road — just a mown slope, a flagpole and a path up from the boat landing. A nation that could have built anything there chose to leave it as a field.

Why the lake bends so sharply

The vessel changes direction repeatedly because this is not one basin but several, each gouged by a different arm of the same glacier system and joined end to end.

The result is that the mountains reset every twenty minutes. You lose the view behind you and gain a completely different one ahead, which is why an hour on this particular lake shows more than an hour on a straight one.

Practicalities

The cruise is one hour of a ten-hour day; the rest is the coach and your own time in town.

Sit on deck if the weather allows, and expect it to be colder on the water than on the quay — the lake makes its own draught even on a still day.

Free time is unguided and museum admission is not part of this ticket, so check closing times against your departure if a particular collection is your reason for coming.

Choose your option

Same route either way — the difference is who else is in the vehicle. Open one to see its dates and work out the price.

Frequently asked

Are the paddle steamers still in service?

Yes. Five run to the regular timetable rather than being brought out for occasions, and the oldest dates from 1901.

Can you see the engines?

Yes, they sit mid-ship behind glass, so you can watch the connecting rods turning while the vessel is under way.

Will my cruise be on a steamer?

That depends on the day's timetable rather than anything promised at booking. Steamer schedules are published seasonally.

How large is the fleet altogether?

Around twenty vessels of all types work the lake, from the historic steamers to modern craft.

What is the Rütli?

A meadow on the southern arm where tradition holds the three original cantons swore the oath that founded the Confederation in 1291.

Is there anything built there?

No. There is no monument, no visitor centre and no road — only a mown slope, a flagpole and a path up from the boat landing.

Can you land at the meadow?

Yes, boats call at a small landing stage below it, and a footpath climbs from there.

Why does the boat keep turning?

The lake is several basins joined end to end, each carved by a different arm of the same glacier system.
