Overview

A tandem paragliding flight from the cliff at Timbis on Bali's southern peninsula, with a certified pilot, a briefing and equipment provided, inside a four-hour window that allows for waiting on the wind.

What to expect

The flight itself is measured in minutes; the four hours exist because conditions decide when you go. You are strapped into a harness in front of the pilot, run a few steps off the cliff edge, and are airborne almost immediately — there is no drop, because the air here goes up.

A cliff that makes its own lift

Timbis is one of the most dependable coastal soaring sites in Southeast Asia, and the reason is simple geometry. The sea breeze comes in off the Indian Ocean and meets a limestone wall running for kilometres along the coast. The air has nowhere to go but up, producing a band of steady lift along the cliff face all day. Pilots here do not need thermals or engines; they need the sea to keep breathing, which it does.

The season is the whole story

From roughly April to October the trade winds blow onshore day after day and the site flies almost every afternoon. In the wet months the wind swings around and the same cliff becomes unusable. This is why flights are booked into a window rather than at a time, and why a cancellation for weather is a normal part of operating here rather than a failure.

You are flying over a raised reef

The cliff you launch from is fossil coral. This whole southern peninsula is a reef that grew in shallow water and was lifted clear of the sea by tectonic movement, which is why the rock is pale, porous and full of shell fragments, and why the beaches below sit in narrow gaps where the limestone has been cut through. You are soaring above a reef that used to be underwater.

What the pilot is doing

Everything, essentially. You wear the harness and enjoy the view; the pilot handles launch, the turns along the ridge and the approach into the landing area, and will usually offer you the brakes for a minute in the middle if you want them. Tandem wings are large and slow, which is what makes them suitable for passengers who have never flown.

Practicalities

There are weight limits, set by the wing and the pilot rather than by preference, and the limit that applies is given at booking. Wear closed shoes you can run a few steps in, and clothing that will not flap. Photos and video are usually offered as an extra by the pilot's own camera arm. The four-hour window is generous on purpose; bring something to do if the wind is late.

Frequently asked

How long is the flight?

Minutes rather than hours. The four-hour window is there because conditions decide the moment you launch, not because you are in the air for four hours.

Why is this site so reliable?

Because the sea breeze hits a limestone wall running for kilometres and has nowhere to go but up. That produces a steady band of lift along the cliff, without any need for thermals.

Does the season matter?

Entirely. Roughly April to October the wind blows onshore almost daily and the site flies most afternoons; in the wet months it swings around and the cliff becomes unusable.

What is the cliff made of?

Ancient reef. This whole headland grew as coral in shallow water and was pushed up by tectonic movement, leaving pale porous stone full of shell fragments and beaches squeezed into narrow gaps.

Do I need experience?

None. You are harnessed in front of a certified pilot who handles launch, flight and landing, and tandem wings are deliberately large and slow.

Are there weight limits?

Yes, set by the wing and the pilot. Check the limit that applies when you book rather than on the day.

What happens if the wind does not arrive?

Flights get delayed within the window or rescheduled. Weather cancellations are routine at any soaring site and are not a sign that something has gone wrong.
