Understand what the day is before you book it

This is a driving day. The four stops are spread across a wide stretch of Bavaria, and four or five hours of a private minivan tour on this route are spent between them rather than at them. That is the trade-off for seeing this much in one go, and it is worth deciding in advance whether you would rather have two stops and time to breathe.

Neuschwanstein is photographed here, not entered

Interior admission runs on timed slots booked separately, and in season those slots are gone long before the day itself. Plan for the view unless you have secured a ticket in advance. Reaching the classic vantage point also means a steep climb above the village — around forty minutes on foot, or a shuttle for part of it — so factor that into what your group can manage.

Linderhof is about the grounds

The building is the smallest of Ludwig's projects and takes very little time. The terraced gardens are the reason to stand there, and their fountains only run between the middle of May and the middle of October. Outside those months the basins sit empty and the effect is quite different.

Oberammergau's facades are a craft

The painted house fronts are not decoration added later but a Bavarian technique worked into wet plaster, most of it depicting scenes from scripture and folk tale. The village is also bound to a Passion Play performed once a decade, which shapes it far more than the shops suggest. Ettal Abbey, a short drive away, gives you the baroque interior the day otherwise lacks.

Frequently asked

Does this include going inside Neuschwanstein?

No. Interior admission is a separately booked timed slot, and in the busier months those sell out well ahead. Without one, the castle is a viewpoint rather than a visit.

How much of the day is spent driving?

A substantial share — commonly four to five hours of the total. The stops are spread widely across Bavaria, which is what makes the day long.

How hard is the walk at Neuschwanstein?

The route up from the village is steep and takes roughly forty minutes on foot. A shuttle covers part of it, but the final approach to the best vantage point is on foot in any case.

When are Linderhof's fountains running?

Between mid-May and mid-October. Outside that window the water features are switched off, which changes the character of the gardens considerably.

Can we change the order or drop a stop?

Yes. The vehicle is private, so the route and pace are agreed with your driver. Dropping one stop is the usual way groups buy themselves more time at the others.
