Overview

Singapore is small enough to read in an afternoon and dense enough that you will miss most of it without someone pointing. Three to four hours with a guide is an orientation rather than a survey — and it is the thing that makes the rest of a short stay usable.

The river and the bay

The old plan is still legible. The colonial administration sat along the north bank of the Singapore River, in white civic buildings and open green, and the commercial city grew on the other side of the water. The landing site where Raffles is said to have come ashore is marked on that bank, and the whole argument about how this city began is concentrated in a few hundred metres.

Downstream the river opens into Marina Bay, and at its mouth stands the Merlion — half lion, half fish, and the photograph everybody takes. Behind it the bay has been closed off into a freshwater reservoir and ringed by a skyline built in a single generation on ground that was sea within living memory.

A city in quarters

Around that core are the quarters the city was deliberately divided into, and each is still recognisably itself.

Chinatown keeps its shophouses and its temples, among them Thian Hock Keng, the oldest Chinese temple in the city, built by seafarers who had survived the passage and came to give thanks. Little India is louder and closer, all garland-sellers and spice. Kampong Glam is the Malay and Arab quarter, with the golden dome of the Sultan Mosque over it and the painted shophouses of Haji Lane running behind.

Walking two of them in an afternoon tells you more about how Singapore works than any museum. The contrast is the point: a shophouse in Chinatown and the towers across the water are twenty minutes apart and a century apart, and a guide who can join the two is what you are booking.

Worth knowing

Singapore is a degree off the equator: hot, humid and prone to a sharp downpour at any hour, so carry water and something light for rain. Temples and mosques ask for shoulders and knees covered, and shoes come off at the door. Attraction admissions are not included — the streets, the quarters and the bay cost nothing, and anything ticketed is yours to choose.
