Sinharaja is a long way inland from the south coast, and the road takes the better part of three hours in each direction. A twelve-hour outing therefore holds three to five hours of actual walking inside perhaps six hours of vehicle. That is the honest shape of it, and it is why the departure is early and the return is at dusk.
Nobody mentions this and everybody encounters it. Terrestrial leeches live in the damp leaf litter here and they will find your ankles. They are harmless, painless and easy to deal with: leech socks are the standard defence and can usually be hired at the entrance. Wearing them turns the single most alarming part of the day into a footnote.
This is not a place for big animals in open country. The rainforest closes in at arm's length and the wildlife is small, endemic and often heard first. What Sinharaja is genuinely famous for is the mixed feeding flock, when a dozen or more species travel through the canopy together in a single noisy wave. A good guide spends much of the walk stopping and listening rather than pointing.
It is a rainforest and it rains in most months, which is precisely what makes it what it is. Trails become slick, roots turn greasy and the light stays low under the canopy. Come prepared for that and the day is superb.

Roughly half. Sinharaja sits well inland and the transfer takes close to three hours in each direction, leaving three to five hours for the walk itself.
Yes, and you will meet them. They are harmless and painless. Leech socks are the standard protection and can usually be hired at the entrance — with them, it stops being a problem.
Almost certainly not. This is dense lowland rainforest where the wildlife is small, often endemic and usually heard before it is seen. Its great spectacle is the mixed feeding flock moving through the canopy.
Expect it. Rain falls here in most months and is the reason the forest exists in this form. Trails get slippery, so grip and a waterproof matter more than an umbrella.
Moderate rather than technical, but sustained: muddy ground, roots, slopes and humidity. Anyone who walks regularly will manage it; it is a long day for those who do not.
