Turkmenistan is one of the least visited countries in the world, and one of the most extraordinary. Most of it is the Karakum desert, and in the middle of that desert a crater of burning gas has been glowing for decades. Its capital, Ashgabat, has been rebuilt almost entirely in white marble.
The Darvaza gas crater is the reason most people come, and a night in a yurt camp beside it is the experience that stays with them. Ashgabat is a city of broad avenues, gold domes and monuments, with the ruins of Parthian Nisa just outside it. In the east, Merv was for long periods one of the greatest cities on the Silk Road, and its walled ruins cover a vast area of the oasis. The west holds the Caspian coast, the banded cliffs of the Yangikala canyon and the warm underground lake of Kow Ata.
