O que vai fazer

These falls are only twenty-three metres high; what makes them the most powerful in Europe is a river 150 metres wide pushed off its own bed by ice-age debris.

Overview

A four-hour outing to northern Switzerland pairing the Rhine Falls with the painted medieval town of Stein am Rhein: coach transfer with commentary, the falls seen from the castle terraces and riverside platforms, and a guided village walk.

What to expect

  • Departure by shared coach from your chosen city.
  • The drive north into the Rhine valley with commentary.
  • The falls from the Laufen Castle terraces and the platforms below.
  • The short transfer along the river to Stein am Rhein.
  • A guided walk through the old town and the local exhibition.
  • The return.

Volume, not height

The Rhine Falls are not tall. At around twenty-three metres they would be unremarkable in Norway or the Alps, and visitors who have seen a long thin waterfall sometimes arrive expecting the same thing.

What makes them the most powerful waterfall in Europe is width and flow. The river is about 150 metres across here, and in summer melt several hundred cubic metres of water pass every second. You feel it before you see it properly — the ground carries the vibration to the terraces, and the spray reaches you well above the lip.

Come in high summer for the volume and in winter for the clarity. They are different spectacles.

The river was pushed here

The falls exist because the Rhine is not running in its own old bed.

During the ice ages the river's original channel was choked with glacial debris, and the water was forced sideways onto a shelf of hard limestone with softer gravel beyond it. It has been cutting through ever since, and the ledge you are watching is where the resistant rock has not yet given way. The whole feature is only around fifteen thousand years old — young enough that it is still a work in progress.

The rock in the middle of the falls is the leftover: a stack of that same hard limestone the water has not managed to remove.

You can climb the rock in the middle

The boats that cross to the central rock are not included here, and they are worth knowing about because most people do not realise it is possible.

There are steps cut into it and a viewing platform at the top, reached only by water, from which you stand in the middle of the river with the falls breaking on either side. It runs seasonally and in suitable water conditions.

The frescoes at Stein am Rhein are advertising

The old town's houses are covered in painted scenes, and they are not decoration for its own sake.

Each fresco illustrates the name of the house — the Sun, the White Eagle, the Red Ox — from an era when buildings were identified by sign and image rather than by number. The paintings are how you found an address, and many are still tied to the inns and shops beneath them.

Practicalities

Four hours is a genuinely short outing, so the stops are brief and there is no room for a long lunch.

The falls viewpoints involve steps and get wet from the spray. Wear shoes with grip and protect anything you would rather not have soaked.

The boat to the central rock operates seasonally and is arranged separately at the landing stage.

Perguntas frequentes

How tall are the Rhine Falls?

Only about twenty-three metres, which would be unremarkable in Norway or the Alps.

Why are they called the most powerful in Europe?

Because of width and flow. The river is around 150 metres across and carries several hundred cubic metres a second in summer melt.

Which countries does the river touch here?

The falls sit on the border reach between two Swiss cantons, with Germany a short distance downstream.

How old is the waterfall?

Around fifteen thousand years, which is young enough that the river is still cutting its way through.

Can fish get past the falls?

Very few can, which is why the species found above and below this point have historically differed.

Can you get onto it?

Yes, by boat only, using steps cut into the rock up to a platform at the top. It runs seasonally and is arranged at the landing stage.

Why are the houses painted?

Each fresco illustrates the house's name, from a time when addresses were signs and images rather than numbers.

When is the best time to visit?

High summer for the sheer volume, winter for clarity. They are genuinely different spectacles.
