Что вас ждёт

A causeway built in 1879 stopped the tides scouring the bay and the sea retreated from the walls; it took a barrage and a new bridge to make the mount an island again.

Overview

A fourteen-hour day from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel with coach both ways, abbey admission, roughly four and a half hours on the island, and an audio commentary in ten languages that you play on your own phone.

What to expect

  • A quarter past seven departure from central Paris.
  • The drive through Normandy, with the first commentary tracks running as you go.
  • Arrival at the mount around midday.
  • The village street, the ramparts and the climb to the abbey.
  • The abbey itself: the cloister, the refectory, the galleries.
  • Free time to walk the perimeter and look out over the bay before the return.

The bay moves further than almost anywhere in Europe

The difference between low and high water here can approach fifteen metres. That is not a statistic you can picture until you see the same view twice in one day: sand out to the horizon, then water up against the walls.

You will hear that the tide comes in as fast as a galloping horse. It does not — the water advances at something nearer a brisk walk. The danger was never the speed. It was that the flats are so flat and so wide that the sea arrives behind you as readily as in front, and the sand in places will not hold your weight.

A road was built, and the bay began to die

In 1879 a solid causeway was laid across the sands so visitors could arrive dry-shod. It worked, and it was a mistake.

The mount had stayed an island because tidal currents scoured the sediment away twice a day. A solid embankment stopped that circulation. Silt built up, salt marsh took hold, and over a century the sea retreated from the walls. Grass grew where the tide should have been. Mont Saint-Michel was slowly becoming a hill in a field.

Undoing it took thirty years and a dam

The fix was expensive and slow. A barrage was built on the small river that reaches the bay, opened at the end of the 2000s, which holds water at high tide and releases it hard on the ebb to flush sediment back out to sea.

Then the causeway itself was demolished and replaced with a light bridge standing on slender piles, so the water can move underneath it. That opened in 2014, and the last of the old embankment was cleared away the following year.

At the highest tides the mount is properly surrounded by sea again — which is the whole point of the place, and something no visitor between 1879 and 2015 could have seen.

Practicalities

Install the app and download the audio from the code before you leave Paris, and bring headphones — none are provided.

The abbey sits at the top of a village built up a rock. There are a great many steps and no way around them.

Lunch is not included, and getting to the Paris departure point is your own arrangement. Fourteen hours for one island is a long day, and about eight of them are spent travelling.

Частые вопросы
How large is the tidal range?

It can approach fifteen metres between low and high water, among the greatest anywhere in Europe.

Does the tide really outrun a horse?

No. That line is an exaggeration — the water moves at closer to a brisk walking pace.

So why were the sands dangerous?

The flats are wide and level, so the sea closes in from behind as easily as in front, and some patches will not bear weight.

What was built in 1879?

A solid causeway across the sand, so that arriving no longer depended on the state of the tide.

What did that do to the bay?

It blocked the twice-daily scouring currents, so silt accumulated and salt marsh spread towards the walls.

How was it reversed?

Not by dredging. The answer was to give the river back the power to do the clearing itself, on a controlled cycle.

What replaced the causeway?

A light bridge on slender piles, opened in 2014, that lets water pass beneath it.

Is it an island again?

At the highest tides, yes — something no visitor could see between 1879 and the clearance finished in 2015.
