Both sites lie within an hour of Yerevan and only a few minutes apart, so almost none of the half day is spent moving. That is the argument for doing them together: the driving is incidental, and what you gain from a private vehicle is the ability to stay somewhere longer than a coach would allow.
The temple stands on a promontory with the Azat Gorge dropping away on three sides, and the setting does as much work as the building. Hellenistic columns on an Armenian clifftop is an unlikely combination, and it reads that way in person.
Geghard's churches are cut back into the cliff rather than raised against it. Look for khachkars — the carved cross-stones that are Armenia's own form — worked directly into the walls and scattered across the slope outside. Some are nine centuries old and still sharp.
