What to expect

• Arrive at the gate on your selected date and redeem the ticket for entry.

The bird that almost disappeared

Look for a small white starling with a blue mask and a long crest. That is the Bali myna, found in the wild nowhere on earth except this island, and it came within a few individuals of extinction — by the early 2000s the wild population had fallen to single figures, driven almost entirely by trapping for the cage-bird trade. Captive breeding across Indonesian and international collections is the reason there are any left at all. It is the island's official emblem, and the one animal here whose survival genuinely turned on zoos.

The animal you cannot see here

Bali had its own tiger. It was smaller than the mainland subspecies, and it was hunted and squeezed out of a shrinking forest until the last confirmed animal was killed in the late 1930s. No photograph of a living Bali tiger is known to exist, and no zoo anywhere holds one. On an island this size, an animal that large ran out of room within a single human lifetime.

What the optional encounters involve

Beyond general admission, the zoo sells close-contact experiences — feeding sessions, guided encounters and photo opportunities with particular animals. They are not part of this ticket and are booked separately at the gate or in advance. They involve direct proximity to animals, and whether that appeals is a matter for you; the general admission route shows you the collection without any of it.

Practicalities

Go early. Animals are most active in the cool of the morning, the paths are shaded unevenly, and by midday both the heat and the crowds peak. Talk and feeding times are posted daily rather than fixed, so a schedule you find online may not match the day you visit.

Transport is not included and the zoo is outside the main resort areas, so arrange a driver or taxi both ways before you set out. Food and drink inside are bought on site, and the ticket admits you once — leaving means the visit is over.
