Why this sand is red

The dune field southeast of the city carries more iron oxide than the paler sand nearer the coast, and that is the whole of the explanation. The effect is not constant: through the middle of the afternoon the same slopes read orange-brown, and it is only in the final hour before the sun goes that they turn genuinely red.

That timing is the argument for this route over the closer, easier ones. If the colour is what brought you, the hour matters more than the itinerary does.

Getting there

Around forty-five minutes southeast into the desert, the last stretch of it off tarmac entirely.

After the driving

The evening then runs to the shape every Dubai safari takes: camel, board, camp, food, entertainment, and a return that lands you back late rather than early. None of that is unusual — the dunes are what distinguish this one.

Frequently asked
Why are these dunes red?

A higher iron oxide content than the paler sand closer to the coast. The colour deepens as the sun drops and is strongest in the final hour.

How does this differ from other evening safaris?

The route heads for a specific red dune field rather than the nearer, paler sand. What follows at the camp is the standard evening format.

When does the colour look its best?

The last hour before sunset. Through the afternoon the same slopes read orange-brown rather than red.

How rough is the driving?

Rough enough to matter. Ask for a front seat if you are prone to motion sickness, and skip a heavy lunch beforehand.
