Full-Day Tour to Sigiriya and Dambulla from Colombo

Two of Sri Lanka’s best-known sites sit within half an hour of each other in the dry-zone plains north of Colombo. One is a palace built on top of a rock; the other is a monastery cut into the side of one. This is a full day out and back to see both.

Sigiriya is a granite plug standing about 200 metres above the plain, visible from a long way off. In the fifth century Kassapa, who had taken the throne from his father, made the summit a royal citadel and the ground below it a planned landscape of water gardens, boulder gardens and terraces. He reigned from 477 to 495, and after him the site returned to the monks who had used its caves long before.

The climb is over 1,200 steps. Partway up, a sheltered pocket of the rock face still carries the frescoes — female figures painted in ochre and red, unmoved for fifteen centuries. Below them runs the mirror wall, once polished to a shine, now covered in verses scratched into it by visitors from the eighth century onwards.

At the final stair, two enormous carved paws sit either side of the steps. They are what remains of a lion gateway through whose mouth the last stretch once passed, and they are the reason for the name. Above them the summit opens out into the foundations of the palace, its cisterns cut into the rock, and a view across the plain in every direction. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

Dambulla is the older of the two and has been in continuous use far longer — a monastery in these caves for over two thousand years. Five caves are cut back under an overhanging rock face, and inside them stand 157 statues: Buddhas seated, standing and reclining, three Sri Lankan kings and four gods.

What people remember is the ceilings. Roughly 2,100 square metres of painted rock follow every contour of the cave roof, so the patterns bend and dip with the stone rather than sitting flat on it. The largest cave runs the length of the complex with a reclining Buddha carved from the living rock at one end. Dambulla was UNESCO-listed in 1991.

This is a twelve-hour day at the outside, and a good part of it is driving — the Cultural Triangle is a long way inland from the coast. Leave early and expect to be back late.

Sigiriya is a genuine climb: over 1,200 steps, open metal stairways bolted to the rock face partway up, and no shade at the top. It is not suitable for anyone with a fear of heights or serious mobility limits, and it is best done early before the heat. Dambulla is gentler but has its own flight of steps up to the caves.

Both are working religious sites. Shoulders and knees must be covered, shoes come off at Dambulla, and the ground can be very hot underfoot at midday — socks are worth bringing. Site entrance fees are charged separately at each and are not included here unless your booking says otherwise.
