The capital of Turkmenistan lies at the foot of the Kopet Dag mountains on the southern edge of the Karakum desert. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1948, it has since independence been rebuilt on a monumental scale and clad in so much white marble that it holds a Guinness World Record for it.
A day in Ashgabat takes in Independence Park and its monument, the Monument of Neutrality, the star-shaped Wedding Palace, the enclosed Ferris wheel of the Alem centre and the National Museum, whose collections come from the ancient sites nearby. Just outside the city are the mud-brick walls of Nisa, an early capital of the Parthian empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and at Gypjak the vast Turkmenbashi Ruhy mosque. Ashgabat is also where most tours to the Darvaza gas crater begin.
