The wealthy moved inland to higher, drier ground to the south, and the city has been sprawling in that direction ever since — which is why the historic core sits at one end of an enormous modern city rather than at its centre.
At Sunda Kelapa, wooden pinisi schooners still load and unload by hand, with men walking cargo up single planks onto ships built from timber in yards on Sulawesi. It is one of the last working sailing-cargo fleets anywhere, and it is not a heritage display — those vessels are carrying goods to islands the container ports do not serve.
Istiqlal, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, stands directly opposite Jakarta Cathedral. That is deliberate, and so is something less obvious: the mosque's design was chosen by open competition, and the winning architect, Frederich Silaban, was a Christian. The two congregations share parking on each other's major festivals, and a pedestrian tunnel now runs between them.
Parts of northern Jakarta are sinking by more than twenty centimetres a year, among the fastest rates measured anywhere, largely because so much groundwater has been pumped from beneath it. The scale of that problem is one reason Indonesia has legislated to move its capital to a new city in Kalimantan. You are visiting a capital that is, on paper, in the process of ceasing to be one.
