Overview

A fourteen-hour guided day from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel, with coach transport, the shuttle up to the village gate, an experienced guide through the abbey and around four and a half hours on the rock.

What to expect

  • Departure from central Paris at a quarter past seven, with commentary as you go.
  • Collection at your hotel where your option covers it, within the city's own postcode.
  • The shuttle from the coach park to the village entrance, which saves a long approach on foot.
  • The guided visit of the abbey: the cloister, the great rooms, the terraces.
  • Free time on the ramparts, in the village and looking out across the bay.

For seventy years this was a jail

The monks were cleared out during the Revolution and the abbey was turned into a prison. It held political prisoners first, then ordinary convicts, and it kept doing so until the 1860s. People at the time called it the Bastille of the seas.

It was, from a jailer's point of view, ideal: one gate, a sheer rock, and a tidal bay that did the work of a wall. Nobody needed to build a perimeter.

The treadwheel is the thing to look for

The single most memorable object in the abbey is a wooden wheel about five metres across, big enough for several men to walk inside it. It is not medieval decoration. It was installed for the prison, and prisoners walked it to haul a sledge of supplies up the outside of the rock on a stone ramp.

It survives, in place, and once you know what it was for the rest of the visit reads differently. The great hall where hundreds of inmates wove straw hats is the same hall the monks had used for something else entirely.

It was closed because writers made it a scandal

The campaign to end it was cultural before it was political. Victor Hugo was among those who publicly condemned the use of a building of that stature as a prison, and the argument gradually took hold that the state was degrading a monument it should have been protecting.

The prison closed in 1863. Within about a decade the mount was classified as a historic monument and the long restoration began — the process that produced the building you will walk through.

Why a guide is worth it here

Almost none of the above is written on the walls. The abbey is presented as a religious building, which it is, but the layers underneath — fortress, prison, building site — need someone to point them out.

Practicalities

Read this before you book a date. On certain days the abbey admission and guided visit are not available: the first Sunday of each month from November to March, the annual heritage weekend, 25 December, 1 January and 1 May. On those dates the day runs without the abbey visit.

Meals and drinks are not included unless your booking says otherwise, and gratuities for the guide and driver are at your discretion.

Hotel collection applies only within central Paris. There are a great many steps once you are on the rock, and no way to avoid them.

よくある質問
What happened to the monks?

They were dispersed during the Revolution, and the buildings were repurposed by the state.

How long was it a prison?

Some seventy years, running from the revolutionary period until the 1860s.

Who was held there?

Political detainees at first, and later ordinary convicts serving sentences.

Why was the site chosen?

A single gate, a sheer rock and a tidal bay meant no perimeter wall had to be built at all.

What is the large wooden wheel?

A treadwheel installed for the prison, walked by inmates to haul a supply sledge up a ramp on the outside of the rock.

Did the prisoners work?

Yes — hundreds of them wove straw hats in a hall the monastic community had used for quite another purpose.

Why did it close?

Writers and public figures turned it into a national embarrassment, arguing the state was degrading what it should protect.

What happened afterwards?

Closure in 1863, classification as a historic monument roughly a decade later, and the start of a very long restoration.
