The attraction here is standing on the floor rather than looking down at it. Most Colosseum visits work the seating tiers and view the arena from above; this semi-private tour takes you out onto the reconstructed platform at the centre, entering through the passage the gladiators used. The same booking covers the Forum and the Palatine, which sit on the other side of the road and are a far larger proposition than the amphitheatre.
You meet your guide outside and pass through security, which everyone does regardless of what they have booked. Inside, the tour works the tiers first, then descends and goes through the arched gate at the eastern end onto the arena floor itself — a wooden deck rebuilt over the void where the machinery sat, level with the sand line, looking up at fifty thousand empty seats.
From there the route crosses to the Forum, the flat ground of temples, arches and basilicas that was the working centre of the empire, and climbs the Palatine above it, where the emperors lived and where the best view over the whole ruin field is found.
Worth doing the arithmetic. The Colosseum alone absorbs a good hour, which leaves the Forum and the Palatine — an archaeological park of some forty hectares — with the remainder. The guided portion is therefore a walk through rather than a survey. Ask your guide whether your site ticket allows you to remain after the tour ends, because most people should: the Palatine in particular rewards another unhurried hour that the schedule cannot give you.
These are two different upgrades and they are constantly confused. The arena floor puts you at the level of the fighting. The hypogeum is the network of tunnels and lift shafts beneath it, where animals and men were held before being raised into the light, and it is booked separately.
The Forum and the Palatine have almost no cover anywhere, and the stone reflects heat back at you all afternoon. Rome's public fountains run continuously with cold drinking water and there are several inside the site — bring an empty bottle and use them rather than carrying a day's supply.
The first entry of the morning and the last two hours before closing are the civilised times. Between eleven and four in summer the site is both crowded and genuinely punishing, and the arena floor, being open and pale, is the hottest place in it. Winter is cold but clear, quiet, and the low light across the Forum is the best it gets.

No, and it is the commonest mix-up. The arena floor puts you at sand level; the hypogeum is the tunnel network beneath it, and that is a separate booking.
For an introduction, yes. For the Forum and the Palatine, no — that park runs to around forty hectares. Ask whether your ticket lets you stay on afterwards, because it usually does and the Palatine deserves it.
No. Reserved entry gets you past the ticket queue, but everyone passes through security, so allow a few minutes for it at the meeting time.
Closed shoes with grip. The Forum is uneven ancient paving and the Palatine involves a climb on loose and polished surfaces in turn.
From the public fountains, which run constantly with cold drinking water and appear inside the archaeological site as well as across the city. Carry an empty bottle and refill.
First thing in the morning or the last couple of hours of the day. In summer the middle hours are hot and crowded, and the open arena floor is the least shaded spot on the whole site.
