Half a day walking one line. Tiananmen Square sits at the southern end of it and the palace begins immediately north, so the two are not separate stops joined by a drive — they are consecutive points on the same axis, and a guide walking you north is the way the whole arrangement was meant to be read.
The palace is red. Its Chinese name, Zijincheng, translates as Purple Forbidden City, and the purple is astronomical. Zi refers to the star Chinese astronomy called Ziwei — Polaris — and to the Ziwei enclosure, the circle of sky around it that turns while everything else wheels past. That enclosure was held to be the residence of the Jade Emperor. The palace on the ground is its counterpart: the earthly emperor living at the fixed point, with the empire revolving around him. Knowing this changes what you are looking at from an assertion of wealth into a diagram of a cosmology.
The palace does not sit in the middle of an old city by accident. It sits on the Central Axis, a 7.8-kilometre alignment running from the Yongding Gate in the south to the Bell and Drum Towers in the north, laid down under the Yuan and built along ever since. UNESCO inscribed the axis itself as World Heritage in July 2024 — not the palace alone, but the line and the buildings ranged along it. This half day walks the central portion of that line on foot.
The square, the gate with the portrait, then north through the outer court — the three great halls on their terraces — into the inner court where the household actually lived, and out at the northern gate. What it does not cover is the side palaces, the treasure and clock galleries and the western apartments, which need a return visit. Your guide will say which of them is worth coming back for.
Both the square and the palace check identity at the entrance against the booking, and neither will make an exception. This catches people out more than anything else here. The palace also moves in one direction only, south to north, so once you are through a gate you do not go back for something missed.
Expect several kilometres on stone, most of it in the open with almost no shade — the courtyards were designed to be empty. Mornings are cooler and the gate queues shorter. Winter is bitter and clear; summer is hot and hazy, and the light is better in the cold months for the same walk.
