Overview

Yala's first block is a stretch of dry thorn scrub, granite outcrops and brackish lagoons on the south-east coast, and it holds roughly one leopard per square kilometre — the densest population recorded anywhere in the world. That statistic is the reason for the traffic, the reason for the early start, and the reason the park is argued about.

What to expect

A vehicle collects you on the coast well before dawn and drives east. At the park you transfer into an open jeep for the drive inside, working the tracks between the waterholes and the coast, and then the long return west.

The road is longer than the number suggests

Query this before booking. Mirissa to the park gate is around a hundred and fifty kilometres on roads that do not permit speed, and it takes something close to three hours in each direction. Add a game drive of three or four hours and the day does not fit inside eight. Most operators leave in the small hours and return in the afternoon. We confirm departure and return times when you book.

Why the leopards here behave differently

The fact that makes this park work. Sri Lanka has no tigers and no lions, so the island's leopard — an endemic subspecies found nowhere else — sits at the top of the food chain with nothing to take its kills or threaten its cubs. It has never needed to haul carcasses into trees or move only at night. The result is an animal that walks down the middle of a track in daylight and lies on warm rock in the open, which is why sightings are realistic here and improbable almost everywhere else.

When one is found, so is everybody else

Said honestly, because it is the single biggest complaint. The block is small, it takes hundreds of vehicles a day in season, and drivers work a radio network. A leopard on a track can pull twenty or thirty jeeps within minutes, and what began as a wildlife encounter becomes a queue of engines with people standing on seats. It has led to vehicle caps being debated for years and to the park being closed outright at times. Ask your driver to take the quieter southern tracks and accept a lesser sighting in peace over a scrum.

Part of the year it is shut

The main block normally closes for around six weeks from early September while the drought is at its worst, to give the animals the waterholes to themselves. Trips running in that window go to an adjoining block or a neighbouring park instead, which is a different and generally quieter experience. Confirm which one you are actually visiting.

Entry to the park is separate

What the booking covers is the transfer, the jeep and the driver-guide. Getting through the gate is a separate transaction, made there on the morning or organised beforehand, and for foreign visitors it is not a small sum. Carry rupees in cash for it.

The first two hours are the whole thing

Why nobody sensible books an afternoon drive here. Animals move at dawn and again at dusk; through the middle of the day the heat pushes everything into shade and the tracks go quiet. Being at the gate when it opens is what separates a good day from a hot drive in a dusty vehicle.

よくある質問

Does this really fit into eight hours?

Not comfortably. The gate is about a hundred and fifty kilometres from Mirissa and takes close to three hours each way, and a game drive adds three or four more. Ask for confirmed departure and return times.

Why are leopards easier to see here?

Sri Lanka has no tigers or lions, so its endemic leopard is the apex predator with nothing to take its kills. It has never needed to hide carcasses in trees or move only at night, and it walks and rests in the open in daylight.

How crowded does it get?

Very, at a sighting. The block takes hundreds of vehicles a day in season and drivers share radios, so one leopard can draw twenty or thirty jeeps within minutes. Ask your driver for the quieter tracks.

Is the park open all year?

Not the main block. It normally closes for around six weeks from early September during the worst of the drought. Trips in that window run to an adjoining block or a neighbouring park, and your itinerary names which.

Is park entry included?

No. The booking covers the transfer, the jeep and the driver-guide. Admission and the conservation levy are settled at the gate or arranged in advance, and for foreign visitors they are not trivial.

Are leopards guaranteed?

No. A dawn drive in the main block during a good season gives a realistic chance rather than a certainty. Elephants, buffalo, crocodiles and birds are close to assured; the cat is not.

Why start so early?

Animals move at dawn and dusk. Through the middle of the day the heat drives everything into shade and the tracks empty. Being at the gate when it opens is what makes the difference.
