Starts Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar, ends Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar. The representative waits in the arrivals area beyond the security perimeter with a name board.

Kashmir has been called a paradise for four hundred years, and the phrase survives because the valley really does look unlike anywhere else in India — a flat green floor at 1,600 metres ringed by snow, with lakes worked by hand-paddled boats, chinar trees planted by Mughal emperors, and villages of timber and mud brick under walnut and apple orchards. This seven-day route stays inside that valley rather than trying to cross the Himalayas, which is what gives it room to slow down.

It begins on the water. Two nights are spent on a Dal Lake houseboat — cedar-panelled rooms, carved walnut furniture and a veranda over the water, a form of accommodation that exists here because colonial-era rules forbade outsiders from owning land and boats were the way around it. A shikara paddled out through the floating gardens at dusk is the standard introduction, and it is the right one.

Srinagar itself gets a full day: the terraced Mughal gardens at Nishat and Shalimar, laid out by Jahangir and his son on the eastern shore with the mountains rising directly behind them; the hill temple at Shankaracharya reached by 240 steps for the view down the whole lake; and the old city with its wooden mosques, papier-mâché workshops and the shawl trade that made the valley's name. From there the route climbs to Gulmarg, a meadow at 2,650 metres where a gondola runs in two stages up the shoulder of Apharwat to nearly 4,000 metres — one of the highest cable cars in the world, working over snow for much of the year and over wildflowers in high summer.

The last stage crosses to Pahalgam through the saffron fields at Pampore and the ruined eighth-century temples at Awantipora, and gives a full day to the three valleys above the town: Aru, where the Lidder river comes down through pine forest; Betaab, named after the film shot in it; and Chandanwari, the roadhead where the Amarnath pilgrimage begins. Travel is by private vehicle with the same driver throughout, and the pace is deliberately gentle — this is a route about landscape rather than monuments.

Open a day for the written plan, then switch to the hour-by-hour breakdown.

Arrive at Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, where a representative meets you and drives the 15 kilometres into the city. The airport has its own security procedure on arrival and departure, which is more thorough than elsewhere in India and worth allowing time for.

Transfer to your houseboat moored on Dal Lake. These are single-storey cedar barges with panelled rooms, carved walnut furniture and a veranda facing the water, and they exist because nineteenth-century rules stopped outsiders owning land in the valley — building on the lake was the way around it.

In the late afternoon, take a shikara out onto the lake. The paddled boats move through the floating vegetable gardens, past the lotus beds and the small houseboat-bound shops that sell saffron, papier-mâché and shawls from the water. Dinner and overnight are on the houseboat.

  • Airport meet-and-greet and transfer to the houseboat
  • A shikara ride through the floating gardens of Dal Lake
  • Dinner and overnight on the water

Houseboat rooms have limited heating; from November to March an extra layer at night is sensible.

Vendors will bring boats alongside during the shikara ride — a polite decline is enough.

And what it does not. Read the right-hand column before you budget.

The essentials first — they are also the ones that can stop a booking.

Essential

Prepaid SIM cards do not work here

  • Prepaid mobile connections issued outside Jammu and Kashmir do not function in the valley.
  • Postpaid Indian connections and international roaming both work normally.
  • Mobile data can be restricted at short notice; hotel and houseboat wifi is the reliable fallback.
Essential

Passport, visa and identity checks

  • A valid passport and an Indian visa or e-visa arranged before travel are the traveller's own responsibility.
  • Identity documents are checked at the airport, at hotels and occasionally on the road; carry the passport itself.
  • Foreign nationals are registered at every property in the valley, which takes a little longer at check-in.
Essential

Local conditions and advisories

  • Check your own government's travel advice for Jammu and Kashmir before booking and again before departure.
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities, including any road restriction or curfew, without exception.
  • Roads to Gulmarg and Pahalgam can close at short notice for weather or security reasons.
Essential

Airport security and local taxi rules

  • Srinagar airport screens all luggage before terminal entry and again at the gate; allow three hours.
  • Beyond Pahalgam only local union taxis may operate, and they are arranged and settled on the day.
  • Gulmarg has similar local arrangements for movement within the meadow in winter.

Layers in every season

  • Evenings are cold all year at Gulmarg and Pahalgam even when Srinagar is warm.
  • The upper gondola station is well below freezing for much of the year regardless of valley temperature.
  • Waterproof footwear is worth having between November and March, and useful in the spring melt.

What a houseboat is and is not

  • Houseboats are moored cedar barges with panelled rooms and a shared veranda, not floating hotels.
  • Heating is limited and hot water may run on a schedule; an extra layer at night is sensible in winter.
  • Access is by shikara from the Boulevard, so luggage is carried across the water.

Mosques, shrines and shopping

  • Women cover their heads at Hazratbal and at the Jama Masjid, and shoes come off at the gate.
  • Mosques close to visitors during prayer times, which shift through the year.
  • Shawl and carpet showrooms are persistent; a plain decline is normal and causes no offence.

Altitude, water and medication

  • Breathlessness at the upper gondola station is common and settles quickly on descent.
  • Drink sealed bottled or filtered water only, including on the houseboat.
  • Carry regular medication in original packaging; pharmacies outside Srinagar are limited.
Common questions
Will my mobile phone work in Kashmir?

Prepaid SIM cards issued outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work in the valley, which surprises most visitors. Postpaid connections from the rest of India work normally, as does international roaming, and hotel and houseboat wifi is generally available.

How many nights are on the houseboat?

Two, at the start of the tour. Houseboats are single-storey cedar barges with panelled rooms and a veranda over the water; heating is limited, so an extra layer is worth having between November and March.

Are the Gulmarg gondola tickets included?

No. Both phases are bought locally on the day and are excluded from the package. They sell out early in peak season, and the gondola stops without notice in high wind or heavy snow.

Why do I need a local taxi at Pahalgam?

Private vehicles are not permitted beyond the town on the Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari roads. A local union taxi is arranged on the morning and settled directly, which is how the whole town operates and cannot be worked around.

When is the best time to visit Kashmir?

April and May bring blossom and full gardens, June to August is green and mild, late October turns the chinars gold and brings the saffron bloom, and December to February is snow, skiing and a very different valley. Each is a distinct trip rather than a better or worse one.

How high does the itinerary go?

Srinagar sits at about 1,600 metres, Gulmarg at 2,650, Pahalgam at 2,200 and the upper gondola station just under 4,000. Only the gondola reaches a height where breathlessness is common, and it passes on descent.

Are meals included?

Breakfast and dinner are included at the houseboat and at every hotel, which is the standard arrangement in the valley. Lunches are not included and are usually taken at a roadside spot or in town while sightseeing.

Is it safe to travel in Kashmir?

The tourist circuit of Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam operates normally and is well supported. Conditions can change, so check your own government's travel advice before booking, and follow local instructions and any curfew or road restriction while you are there.
