Starts Chennai International Airport, ends Cochin International Airport — an open-jaw trip, so book your flights accordingly. The representative waits outside the arrivals hall with a name board for the transfer to the hotel.

South India is a different country from the one most first-time itineraries show. There are no Mughal domes here and very little of the Rajput palace tradition; instead there are granite temple towns that have been in continuous worship for a thousand years, a French colonial grid that still uses its own street names, bronze casting workshops that never stopped, and a coastline of backwaters where the road gives out. This thirteen-day route crosses Tamil Nadu from the coast to the temple heartland and then over the Western Ghats into Kerala.

It opens in Chennai and moves quickly to the shore temples of Mahabalipuram, where seventh-century Pallava sculptors cut whole shrines out of standing rock and left the largest bas-relief in the world unfinished on a granite face. Pondicherry follows, and it is a genuine oddity — a former French territory whose seafront quarter keeps its bougainvillea walls, its yellow-washed colonial houses and a street plan that separates the French town from the Tamil town by a canal that no longer runs.

The middle of the journey belongs to the Chola country. Thanjavur's Brihadeeswarar Temple, finished in 1010, carries an eighty-tonne granite capstone on a tower thirteen storeys high, and the smaller temples at Darasuram and Gangaikonda Cholapuram are less visited and in some ways finer. At Trichy the temple island of Srirangam is the largest working temple complex anywhere, with seven concentric walls and a town living between them. Madurai closes the Tamil half at the Meenakshi Amman Temple, where twelve gopurams covered in painted figures rise above a city that has grown in rings around it, and where the night ceremony carrying the god to the goddess's chamber has been performed daily for centuries.

Crossing the Ghats into Kerala changes the register entirely. Thekkady sits at the edge of the Periyar reserve in spice country, where cardamom and pepper grow under the forest canopy and wildlife is watched from a boat. Alleppey brings a night on a private houseboat in the backwaters, and Fort Kochi ends the journey with Chinese fishing nets, a Portuguese church, a Dutch palace of Kerala murals and an evening of Kathakali. Travel is by private air-conditioned vehicle with the same driver for the full route, with licensed local guides in each city.

Open a day for the written plan, then switch to the hour-by-hour breakdown.

Arrive at Chennai International Airport, where a representative meets you and transfers you to your hotel. The airport is around 20 kilometres from the city centre and the drive takes between forty minutes and an hour.

The day is unscheduled. Chennai is hot and humid for most of the year and the itinerary assumes you will want to rest rather than start sightseeing on an arrival day. If you are up in the evening, the Marina promenade is at its best after dark, when the whole city seems to walk it.

  • Airport meet-and-greet and private transfer to the hotel
  • Evening free before the city tour begins

Rooms are normally released in the early afternoon; earlier check-in depends on availability.

And what it does not. Read the right-hand column before you budget.

The essentials first — they are also the ones that can stop a booking.

Essential

Passport and Indian visa

  • A valid passport and an Indian visa or e-visa arranged before travel are the traveller's own responsibility.
  • Entry requirements change without notice; confirm the current rules for your nationality before booking flights.
  • Hotels and the houseboat operator both register passport details at check-in, so carry the document itself.
Essential

Temple etiquette in Tamil Nadu

  • Shoes are removed at the outer gate, not at the sanctum, so you will walk a long way barefoot on stone.
  • Shoulders and knees must be covered at every temple on this route.
  • Non-Hindus may not enter the inner sanctums at Srirangam, Meenakshi and Kapaleeshwarar.
  • Phones and cameras are restricted at Meenakshi and are usually deposited at the entrance.
Essential

Travel insurance is mandatory

  • Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical treatment, evacuation and baggage is required before departure.
  • Check that the policy covers boat travel and an overnight stay on water.

Heat, humidity and hill cold

  • Tamil Nadu is hot and humid for most of the year; light cotton and more water than usual are both necessary.
  • Thekkady is cool in the evening and cold from December to February, so pack one warm layer.
  • Socks for hot temple floors and a hat for open sites like Mahabalipuram are worth more here than most gear.

The houseboat night

  • The houseboat is a converted timber barge, not a hotel; cabins are compact and the deck is the living space.
  • Air conditioning normally runs on a fixed schedule overnight while the generator is on.
  • Boats moor before sunset and stay moored until morning, as required by Kerala state regulations.

Road stages and journey times

  • The route is covered by road across roughly 1,300 kilometres, with a state border crossing into Kerala.
  • Hill stages take longer than the distance suggests and departure times are set the evening before.
  • The same driver stays with you for the full route and the vehicle carries drinking water.

Food, water and insects

  • Drink sealed bottled or filtered water only, including on the houseboat where it is supplied.
  • Mosquito repellent is needed on the backwaters, particularly from late afternoon.
  • Carry regular medication in original packaging with a copy of the prescription.

Walking, stairs and barefoot stone

  • The Trichy Rockfort is 437 steps with no lift, and can be skipped without affecting the rest of the day.
  • Temple courtyards are walked barefoot on uneven granite, sometimes for several hundred metres.
  • Mahabalipuram is open rock with no paths; sensible footwear matters more there than anywhere else.
Common questions
Can I enter the temples as a non-Hindu visitor?

Almost all of the complex is open at every site on this route. The inner sanctums at Kapaleeshwarar, Srirangam and Meenakshi are restricted to Hindus, but the gopurams, pillared halls, tanks and market corridors — which is the great majority of what there is to see — are open to everyone.

How much driving does the itinerary involve?

Six of the thirteen days include a road stage, most between two and four hours, and the route covers roughly 1,300 kilometres in total. The longest single days are Madurai to Thekkady and Thekkady to Alleppey, both around four hours.

Do I fly in and out of the same airport?

No. The route starts at Chennai and ends at Kochi, so you will need an open-jaw international booking or a domestic connection at one end. Both are well served by international carriers.

What should I wear at the temples?

Shoulders and knees covered at every site, and shoes removed at the outer gate. Socks are worth carrying because granite courtyards get extremely hot from mid-morning, and long trousers or a long skirt are more comfortable than shorts in any case.

When is the best time of year for South India?

November to March is the most comfortable across both states, with lower humidity and reliable weather. April and May are very hot inland at Thanjavur and Madurai, and the monsoon runs from June to September on the Kerala side and again in October and November on the Tamil coast.

Is the houseboat private?

Yes. The boat is booked for your party alone with its own crew of three including a cook, and only the size of the barge changes with the number of travellers.

Are temple entrance charges included?

No. Entry at the temples, monuments, museums and the Periyar reserve is excluded and settled locally, as are the special darshan queue arrangements some temples offer. The Periyar boat ride and the spice walk are included.

Is this itinerary suitable for someone with limited mobility?

Only partly. The temples involve long walks on uneven granite in bare feet, the Trichy Rockfort is 437 steps with no lift, and Mahabalipuram is open rock. Several elements can be dropped or substituted, and that is worth discussing before booking.
