Yellowstone became the world's first national park in 1872, established fourteen years before the concept of a "national park" had a working legal definition anywhere else on Earth, and the designation still shapes how the park operates today: a vast, mostly wild landscape sitting atop one of the planet's largest active volcanic systems, protected specifically for its geothermal features and wildlife rather than for scenery alone. Grand Teton National Park, its smaller neighbor just to the south, offers a completely different kind of drama — sheer, glacier-carved peaks rising abruptly from the valley floor with no foothills to soften the transition — and the two parks, connected by a scenic parkway, are commonly combined into a single trip covering geysers, wildlife, and some of the most photogenic mountains in North America.
Yellowstone's Geothermal Wonders
Yellowstone sits directly above the Yellowstone Caldera, a supervolcano whose last major eruption occurred roughly 640,000 years ago and whose ongoing geothermal activity powers the park's more than 10,000 hydrothermal features — the largest concentration of geysers, hot springs, mud pots, and fumaroles found anywhere on the planet. Old Faithful, the park's most famous geyser, earned its name for a genuinely predictable eruption schedule, going off roughly every 60 to 110 minutes and shooting water 100 to 180 feet into the air, a reliability that has made it the centerpiece of Yellowstone tourism since the park's earliest days. Grand Prismatic Spring, the largest hot spring in the United States and third-largest in the world, draws its famous rainbow coloring from heat-loving bacteria (thermophiles) that thrive in specific temperature bands radiating out from the scalding blue center, a phenomenon best appreciated from an elevated overlook trail rather than the boardwalk level, where the spring's full color range is harder to see. The Norris Geyser Basin, the park's hottest and most dynamically changing thermal area, and Mammoth Hot Springs, with its distinctive travertine terraces built up by dissolved limestone rather than silica, round out a geothermal landscape unlike anything else accessible by road in North America.
Wildlife in Yellowstone
Yellowstone holds the largest concentration of wild mammals in the lower 48 states, and Lamar Valley, often called "America's Serengeti," offers the park's most reliable wildlife viewing, particularly at dawn and dusk when bison, elk, pronghorn, and — with patience and a good spotting scope — wolves and grizzly bears become active across the open valley floor. The park's gray wolf population, eliminated by the 1920s through deliberate extermination programs, was reintroduced in 1995 in one of conservation biology's most closely studied and celebrated projects, triggering a cascade of ecological changes (a trophic cascade) as wolves altered elk behavior and, in turn, allowed streamside vegetation to recover — a case study now taught in ecology courses worldwide. Yellowstone's bison herds, among the last continuously wild bison populations in the country and direct descendants of animals that survived the near-extinction of the species in the nineteenth century, are commonly encountered directly on park roads, where rangers strongly advise maintaining a minimum 25-yard distance (100 yards for bears and wolves) given how frequently visitors underestimate how fast and unpredictable these animals can be.
Yellowstone Lake and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
Yellowstone Lake, the largest high-elevation lake in North America at over 7,700 feet, remains cold enough year-round that falling in poses a genuine hypothalamic shock risk even in midsummer, a fact that shapes the park's boating and fishing safety guidance considerably. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, carved by the Yellowstone River through rock colored yellow, orange, and pink by hydrothermal alteration (the source of the park and state's name, according to most historical accounts), drops over two major waterfalls — the Upper and Lower Falls — with the Lower Falls, at 308 feet, standing nearly twice the height of Niagara Falls and viewable from several dramatically positioned overlooks along both rims.
Grand Teton: Peaks Without Foothills
Grand Teton National Park's defining visual feature is the abruptness of its mountains: the Teton Range rises more than 7,000 feet directly from the valley floor (Jackson Hole) with essentially no foothill transition, a result of the range's relatively young age — geologically speaking, among the youngest in the Rockies — and the specific fault-block mechanics that thrust the mountains upward while the valley floor dropped simultaneously. Jenny Lake, sitting at the base of the range and reachable by a short boat shuttle across the water, serves as the starting point for popular hikes into Cascade Canyon and up toward Inspiration Point, with views back across the lake toward the peaks ranking among the most photographed scenes in the American West. The valley's wildlife includes a resident moose population considerably easier to spot here than in Yellowstone, along with pronghorn that complete one of the longest land mammal migrations in the continental United States, traveling roughly 150 miles between Grand Teton and their winter range near Pinedale, Wyoming each year.
Jackson Hole and the Gateway Towns
Jackson, the valley's main town, has grown from a genuine ranching outpost into a well-heeled gateway destination with a ski resort (Jackson Hole Mountain Resort) drawing a separate winter tourism season entirely apart from the summer national park crowds, and its downtown square, marked by four arches built from naturally shed elk antlers, remains one of the more recognizable small-town landmarks in the American West. West Yellowstone, Montana, and Cody, Wyoming, serve as the park's other main gateway towns, each offering a different approach angle into Yellowstone and a noticeably less upscale, more traditional gateway-town feel than Jackson's increasingly resort-oriented atmosphere.
Practical Notes: Getting Around and When to Go
Yellowstone's main roads typically open in stages through April and May and close for winter by early November, with July and August bringing the warmest weather alongside the heaviest crowds and most competitive lodging and campground availability, booked out many months in advance for anything inside the park itself. Late May through June and September offer a reasonable compromise of open roads, functioning facilities, and noticeably thinner crowds, with September in particular prized by wildlife watchers for the added spectacle of elk rut, when bull elk bugle and spar for mates across both parks. The drive between Yellowstone's major areas covers considerable distance — a full loop of the park's figure-eight road system runs over 140 miles — so most visitors plan multiple days simply to see the geothermal basins, Lamar Valley, and Grand Canyon area without feeling rushed, before continuing south through the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway into Grand Teton for a few additional days focused on hiking and mountain views.
