There is no river at Versailles, so the fountains were never all on at once: whistlers signalled ahead and turned each one on just before the king reached it.

Overview

A nine-hour day from Paris to Versailles with coach transport, tickets to the palace and estate, and audio commentary you play on your own phone through the palace's official app while you go at your own speed.

What to expect

  • Depart Paris by air-conditioned coach with a host handling the practicalities.
  • Arrival and entry to the palace.
  • The King's and Queen's Grand Apartments and the Hall of Mirrors, with the audio track running.
  • The gardens, at whatever pace you choose.
  • The long walk out to the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon and the Queen's Hamlet.
  • The return coach to Paris.

The fountains were the hardest engineering on the site

Versailles is on a plateau. There is no river worth the name anywhere near it, and the ground does not hold water. Louis XIV nonetheless wanted more than a thousand jets playing across a garden the size of a small town.

The first serious answer was a machine on the Seine at Marly, finished in the 1680s: fourteen waterwheels driving more than two hundred pumps, lifting water in stages up a hillside of roughly a hundred and sixty metres into an aqueduct. It ran day and night, it could be heard from a long way off, and it was one of the most ambitious machines built anywhere before the industrial age.

It still was not enough

So they cheated, and the cheat is the best story on the estate. The fountains were never all running at once. Fountaineers were posted around the garden with whistles, and as the king walked his route they signalled ahead: turn this one on before he arrives, shut it off once he has passed. What visitors saw was a garden entirely in play. What actually existed was a rolling wave of water moving just ahead of one man.

There was an attempt to fix the supply properly by cutting a canal from the river Eure and carrying it on a vast aqueduct. Thousands of soldiers were put to work on it and many died of fever in the marshy ground. The war took the money, the project was abandoned, and the unfinished arches are still standing at Maintenon.

What this means for your day

Fountain displays run to a published schedule in season rather than continuously, so seeing them depends on the day you travel. The garden is worth the walk either way, but do not plan the visit around water that may not be switched on.

The estate is bigger than people expect

The Trianons and the Hamlet are a serious walk from the palace — think of it as a second visit rather than an add-on, and budget the time before you settle into the state rooms.

Practicalities

Install the palace app and download the audio before you leave your accommodation, and bring your own earphones. The host is there for transfers and logistics rather than to guide you through the rooms.

Lunch is not included across a nine-hour day, and getting to the Paris departure point is your own arrangement.

常见问题
Why was water a problem here?

The site sits high with no usable river nearby, and the ground does not hold what falls on it.

What was the machine at Marly?

A pumping works on the Seine using fourteen waterwheels and over two hundred pumps to raise water in stages.

How high did it lift the water?

High enough that the works had to raise it in separate stages, each with its own reservoir, before it could run onward by gravity.

Did it solve the shortage?

No. Even at full output the supply could not keep the whole garden playing at once.

So how did the garden look full?

Whistled signals ran ahead of the king, opening each fountain just before he reached it and closing it behind him.

Was there a permanent fix attempted?

A canal from the Eure with a huge aqueduct was started, then abandoned when the war took the funds.

What became of that project?

Many of the soldiers put to work on it died of fever, and the unfinished arches still stand at Maintenon.

Do the fountains run every day now?

No. They follow a published seasonal schedule, so it depends which day you travel.
