Singapore Sunset Cruise On A Luxury Catamaran

Overview

Singapore is one of the busiest ports on earth, and the water south of it is the reason the city exists. A sunset sail takes you out into it: away from the shore, past the southern islands, with the skyline standing up behind you and hundreds of ships lying at anchor out in the strait.

The boat

A catamaran has two hulls and sits flat, which makes it a steadier and far roomier boat than a yacht of the same length — there is deck to move around on, and netting stretched between the hulls at the bow that is the best seat aboard if you do not mind a little spray.

Three hours is the right length for this. Long enough to get properly offshore and to stay out through the light changing; short enough that it remains an evening rather than a voyage.

Sunset

On the equator the sun goes down fast and at much the same time all year, so the sunset here is a short, reliable event rather than the long northern fade. The sky goes through it quickly, and then the city lights come up behind you and the anchored ships start showing their own lights out across the water.

The southern islands sit low and green on the way out, and the container terminals work through the night in the distance — it is an unusually industrial backdrop for a sunset, and a genuinely spectacular one.

Take a light layer: it is cooler on the water than ashore once the sun is down, and the wind is constant under way. Soft-soled or bare feet are usual on deck; heels are not. Sun cream is still worth putting on for the first hour.
