Bruges is intact because Bruges went broke

In the fourteenth century this was one of the richest cities in Europe. Merchants from across the continent kept houses here, and the building where traders met — the property of a family called van der Beurse — gave several European languages their word for a stock exchange.

All of it depended on a tidal inlet, the Zwin, that connected the city to the sea. Through the fifteenth century the Zwin silted up. Ships got bigger, the channel got shallower, and there was no engineering answer at the time. The trade moved to Antwerp, and Bruges was left inland with a harbour it could not use.

Four centuries of poverty

What happened next is the reason your day here is worth the drive. Bruges did not adapt and prosper. It became genuinely poor, and stayed poor for something close to four hundred years — by the nineteenth century one of the most deprived cities in the country, and famous enough for its melancholy that a novelist made it the subject of a book that fixed the reputation.

Poverty is a peculiar form of conservation. Prosperous cities knock things down: they widen streets, replace guildhalls with offices, straighten what is crooked. Bruges could not afford to. The brick gables, the canals and the street pattern survived because there was never any money to replace them.

By the time money returned, in the form of visitors, the value of what had been left alone was obvious, and it was restored rather than cleared.

What that means when you are standing in it

You are not looking at a reconstruction of a medieval city. You are looking at a real one that stopped, which is a rarer thing and worth slowing down for.
